Nigeria’s national digital identity rollout continues to accelerate rapidly, with the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) reporting that NIN enrollments hit 123.9 million in October, marking a significant milestone in the country’s identity registration efforts.
This figure reflects the number of Nigerians and legal residents, both at home and abroad who now have a National Identification Number (NIN) recorded in the central database as of October 2025. The NIN system, established under the NIMC Act, serves as the foundation of Nigeria’s identity infrastructure, enabling individuals to securely prove their identity for access to key services.
The surge in enrollment is part of a broader push by the NIMC to expand identification coverage nationwide. Earlier data showed similar large enrollment counts, with around 123.5 million NINs issued by August 2025. NIMC reports that improved registration drives, infrastructure upgrades and expanded enrollment centers have contributed to these gains, helping reduce bottlenecks and extend services to more communities across Nigeria.
Securing a NIN has become increasingly important for Nigerians because it functions as an official, government‑issued identity number that individuals use for a range of activities including SIM card registration, opening bank accounts, accessing government services and verifying identity in both public and private sectors.
The commission’s ongoing efforts include enhancing digital tools and platforms to streamline the enrollment process, which in turn supports more efficient service delivery. The NIN database now integrates with multiple government agencies, underpinning planning, security and citizen verification processes.
The rapid expansion of NIN coverage underpins Nigeria’s broader digital economy strategy by unlocking access to formal financial services, reducing fraud, and improving public service targeting efforts that can increase productivity and investor confidence while expanding the taxable base and enhancing economic planning.
