Coris Bank Secures $11.6 Million Investment From Dutch Lender to Accelerate West African Expansion

Coris Bank International, the Burkina Faso-based financial services group founded by banking entrepreneur Idrissa Nassa, has raised €10 million ($11.6 million) from Dutch development finance institution FMO to support its regional expansion, strengthen digital banking infrastructure, and boost lending capacity across West Africa.

The investment forms part of a larger €102 million ($118.4 million) consortium round led by Mediterrania Capital Partners and including development finance institutions such as BII, BIO, and IFU. While the capital injection strengthens the bank’s balance sheet, existing shareholders will retain operational control.

Idrissa Nassa, founder and CEO of Coris Bank, described the partnership as a validation of the bank’s pan-WAEMU strategy. “This investment allows us to accelerate growth while maintaining strong governance frameworks. It underscores our commitment to building a regional financial platform that combines local expertise with international best practices,” he said.

The consortium investment highlights a growing trend in African banking, where regional institutions attract global development and private equity capital to expand reach, increase financial inclusion, and fill gaps left by international banks exiting certain markets. Participating DFIs bring not just funding but technical expertise, requiring adherence to international standards in governance, risk management, and compliance.

Coris Bank, which has grown through a mix of organic expansion and selective acquisitions, will use the funds to open new branches, enhance digital banking capabilities, and expand SME lending in underserved markets. FMO emphasised that the investment aligns with its development mandate, supporting financial inclusion, regional trade, and sustainable economic growth across West Africa.

Founded in 2008 with just $3 million in capital, Coris Bank has grown under Nassa’s leadership into a regional powerhouse with operations in Côte d’Ivoire, Mali, Togo, Senegal, Benin, Niger, Guinea-Bissau, and Chad, boasting over $9 billion in assets. The bank now faces the challenge of scaling across multiple jurisdictions while maintaining prudent lending and regulatory compliance.

Observers say that with this infusion, Coris Bank is well-positioned to cement its role as a leading homegrown financial institution in West Africa, capable of competing with both local rivals and international banks, while contributing meaningfully to regional economic development.
