Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq has promised to provide the state chapter of the Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NUP) with a permanent secretariat and an official bus, while pledging to address outstanding rent issues affecting their current office in Ilorin.
The governor gave these assurances during a meeting with NUP leadership at the Government House in Ilorin, according to a report published by The PUNCH on October 28, 2026.
AbdulRazaq explained that the union’s existing office operates under a Certificate of Temporary Occupancy (CTO), which does not confer permanent ownership. He committed to working directly with the Head of Service to identify a permanent location and resolve immediate accommodation challenges.
“On the issue of the bus, we’ll sort that one out,” AbdulRazaq assured the delegation.
The commitments address longstanding union requests following an intervention in September 2024, when the Kwara State Geographic Information Service issued a vacation notice to the NUP as part of Ilorin’s broader urban renewal project. As reported by Vanguard on September 9, 2024, the governor previously directed temporary accommodation to be secured pending a permanent facility.
During the meeting, State Commissioner for Finance, Dr. Hauwa Nuru, affirmed that the state remains up to date with regular pension disbursements and ongoing gratuity provisions. However, Nuru clarified that retirees still expecting unpaid pensions from the 2015–2018 period must complete the government’s mandatory verification exercise before those backlogs can be cleared.
NUP State Chairman, Comrade Mahmud Oladimeji Saidu, commended the administration’s record since taking office in May 2019. Saidu recalled that pensioners previously suffered fractional payments, sometimes slashed to 25 or 50 percent, under past administrations. He noted that the current government cleared billions of naira in inherited arrears and has consistently disbursed full monthly pensions on or before the 25th of every month.
While the governor’s assurances mark significant progress in state-union engagements, pensioners await swift implementation to secure their permanent infrastructure and vehicle support.
