The Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency has moved to automate the Nigerian Ship Registry as part of efforts to modernise registration services and make the Nigerian flag more attractive to local and international shipowners.
NIMASA showcased the ongoing digital transformation during a stakeholder webinar held between October 6 and October 8, 2026, bringing together shipowners, operators, maritime professionals, financial institutions, insurers and other industry stakeholders.
The new platform is designed to provide round-the-clock access to ship registration services, streamline applications and approvals, and allow faster issuance of electronic certificates.
It will also provide real-time tracking of ship mortgages and other registry transactions, giving financial institutions and other stakeholders greater visibility over vessel financing and related activities.
NIMASA Deputy Director and Head of Public Relations, Osagie Edward, said the automation would make interaction with the Ship Registry more seamless while improving the agency’s ability to provide efficient and transparent services.
NIMASA Director-General, Dayo Mobereola, said the initiative formed part of the agency’s broader effort to transform the Nigerian flag and create an environment that supports greater participation in international shipping.
The platform is currently undergoing user testing, with NIMASA gathering feedback on its functionality, security and user experience ahead of full deployment.
The agency said the digital system is expected to reduce administrative delays associated with conventional paper-based registration and improve the overall efficiency of Nigeria’s maritime services.
