Google has introduced a free digital learning platform that will allow Nigerians and other Africans to develop artificial intelligence (AI) and other technology skills without needing constant internet access.

The initiative, known as Skilling Africa with Google, is part of the company’s plan to equip three million people across Africa with digital and AI skills by 2030. It also targets 250,000 graduates by the end of 2026.

The launch was announced by Google’s Communications and Public Relations Manager for West Africa, Taiwo Kola-Ogunlade, in a statement on Monday. Google Africa’s Managing Director, Alex Okosi, said the continent needed more skilled people who could develop, apply and improve AI technologies. He noted that Africa had a major opportunity to influence the future of artificial intelligence but would need a stronger pool of skilled professionals to achieve this.

The platform is designed to make digital education more accessible, particularly for people who face challenges with internet connectivity and high data costs. The learning hub combines more than 15 existing Google training programmes, offering courses in artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, cloud computing, data analytics, digital marketing and small business development.

Some of the programmes include Hustle Academy, which provides business training for entrepreneurs and small business owners, and Google Career Certificates, which offers professional training in data analytics, IT support and cybersecurity. Developers can also access Google Cloud Skills programmes to improve their technical knowledge and build their capacity in cloud technology.

Another feature of the platform is SCOUT, an AI-powered learning assistant designed to support users throughout their studies. It helps learners understand difficult topics, ask questions and create study schedules based on their learning needs. Participants can also monitor their progress and receive verifiable badges after completing courses. These badges can serve as evidence of their skills when seeking employment or offering professional services.

Google said the platform was developed to accommodate people using basic smartphones and laptops, making it accessible beyond those with expensive devices. It also allows users to download lessons whenever they have access to Wi-Fi and continue learning without an internet connection.

“Users can download lessons through Wi-Fi and subsequently access the learning materials offline without incurring additional mobile data costs,” he said.

The platform currently supports English, Swahili and Arabic, while Google is working to introduce more African languages, including Hausa, to reach a wider audience. Okosi said the initiative builds on the company’s previous digital education efforts, which have helped more than seven million young Africans complete foundational digital skills training. The launch comes as governments and technology companies increase efforts to prepare young people for opportunities in the digital economy.

In May 2026, the Federal Government partnered with Coursera to establish the Digital Training Academy, which aims to train 36,000 Nigerian youths in artificial intelligence, data science, cybersecurity, cloud computing and software engineering. Google also introduced its Build with AI programme in August 2025, targeting 1,000 Nigerian developers for training in generative AI. The 11 week programme was organised in partnership with GOMYCODE.

Google said its latest learning initiative is free and open to students, job seekers, business owners and developers across Africa. Interested participants can access the platform through skillingafrica.withgoogle.com.
