The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has shut several shops at Lagos’ Trade Fair Complex over suspected sales and distribution of unregistered cosmetic products.
The enforcement operation, carried out by NAFDAC’s Investigation and Enforcement Directorate, Cosmetics Division, took place on August 26 and 27, 2026. The agency announced the action on its X account on Saturday, August 29.
The affected shops were locked and marked with NAFDAC HOLD notices as the agency begins further regulatory procedures. NAFDAC also collected samples of the suspected products for laboratory examination and investigation.
Among the businesses affected were Vincentmo World, located opposite Bmeck Plaza; Amazon City of Fragrance at Beauty Promise Land Plaza; Aza-King Store Perfumes opposite Fidelity Bank; PP2 & Fragrance International Ltd.; No. D12 Fragrance Doctor Shop at Abia Plaza; and God & Obaino Fragrance Store opposite Wave Plaza.
Other shops and business premises within the Trade Fair Complex were also identified during the operation.
NAFDAC said owners and operators of the affected businesses were issued invitation letters to appear before the agency for questioning and other necessary regulatory proceedings.
The enforcement is part of NAFDAC’s wider effort to prevent unregistered cosmetic products from reaching Nigerian consumers.
Cosmetics sold in Nigeria are required to meet regulatory standards before they can be manufactured, imported, distributed or sold to the public. Products that are not properly registered may pose risks to consumers because their ingredients, quality and safety may not have been adequately assessed by regulators.
The Trade Fair Complex, located along the Lagos-Badagry Expressway in Ojo, is one of Lagos’ major commercial hubs. It attracts traders dealing in cosmetics, perfumes, household goods, fashion items, imported products and other consumer goods.
Because of the volume of commercial activity in the area, regulatory agencies have repeatedly carried out enforcement operations there.
The latest action follows previous discoveries by NAFDAC involving suspected counterfeit and unregistered products at the complex.
In February, the agency reported uncovering counterfeit and unregistered cosmetic products worth more than N3 billion at the APT Trade Fair Complex in Lagos. Earlier that month, NAFDAC also announced the seizure of more than 10 million doses of fake malaria drugs and cosmetic products estimated at about N3 billion at the Trade Fair Market.
The agency has also intensified action against other forms of illegal production in Lagos. In April, it reported dismantling two illegal production facilities involved in the counterfeiting and adulteration of alcoholic beverages. The operation led to the seizure of products valued at about N350 million.
NAFDAC’s latest enforcement highlights the growing regulatory pressure on businesses involved in the importation, distribution and sale of consumer products.
The agency has repeatedly warned traders and businesses to ensure that products sold to Nigerians are properly registered and comply with safety requirements.
The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has similarly increased its focus on consumer safety and compliance.
The commission recently directed manufacturers, importers, distributors and retailers to withdraw consumer goods that fail to meet mandatory labelling requirements. It also warned businesses that continued distribution or sale of non-compliant products could result in enforcement action.
The FCCPC has previously sealed businesses over consumer-related violations, including incorrect pricing, expired products, poor storage practices and suspected counterfeit goods.
For traders and retailers, the latest NAFDAC operation serves as another warning that regulatory compliance is becoming increasingly important in Nigeria’s consumer market.
Businesses dealing in cosmetics and other regulated products are expected to verify that their goods are properly registered and meet the required standards before placing them on the market.
