In a major move for Nigeria’s digital future, the Federal Executive Council (FEC) has officially approved the acquisition and deployment of two next-generation High-Throughput Communication Satellites, NIGCOMSAT-2A and NIGCOMSAT-2B.
The project, to be led by the Nigerian Communications Satellite Limited (NIGCOMSAT), will expand broadband access, strengthen national communications infrastructure, and extend connectivity to underserved and hard-to-reach communities.
The satellites will also support broadcasting, enterprise communications, government services, and critical national security needs while reducing Nigeria’s reliance on foreign satellite infrastructure.
NIGCOMSAT’s Managing Director, Jane Nkechi Egerton-Idehen, described the approval as “a significant milestone” for the company and the country. “Our priority is to translate this investment into measurable value for Nigerians,” she said.
The satellites will be delivered by Thales Alenia Space of France and Israel Aerospace Industries. With FEC approval secured, the next phase includes technology partner engagement, contract finalisation, and technical planning ahead of manufacture and launch.
This approval marks a critical step in modernising Nigeria’s satellite capacity and advancing the country’s digital economy agenda.
