X Replaces Revenue Sharing With New Creator Rewards Programme

X, formerly known as Twitter, has announced a major change to the way creators earn money on the platform.

The social media company is ending its current Revenue Sharing programme and replacing it with a new Original Content Rewards programme, which will focus more heavily on creators who produce their own content.

X announced the change on Friday through its X Creators account, saying the new programme is designed to reward people who bring original ideas, expertise, reporting, creativity and commentary to the platform.

The company has stopped accepting new applications for its existing Revenue Sharing programme. However, creators already enrolled will continue receiving payments for a limited period.

Existing participants are expected to receive three final payments. Two payments are scheduled for August 14 and August 28, while the final payment covering eligible earnings through September 7 is expected around September 11.

From September 8, existing Revenue Sharing creators will be able to apply for the new Original Content Rewards programme, provided they meet the new eligibility conditions.

The first payment under the new programme is scheduled for August 28, while creators moving from the old programme and enrolling from September 8 are expected to receive their first payment on September 25.

Under the new system, eligible creators will earn based on qualified impressions generated by their original posts. Payments will be made every two weeks.

X said qualified impressions will focus on unique views from Premium users on the Home Timeline, provided at least half of the post is visible.

However, not every view will count. Repeated views from the same account, paid or promoted views, artificially generated impressions and fraudulent activity will be excluded.

Creators must meet several requirements to participate. They must be at least 18 years old, live in an eligible country, maintain an account in good standing and use either a personal or business account.

They must also subscribe to X Premium, Premium+ or Premium Business, have at least 500 verified followers and generate at least 500,000 Home Timeline impressions from verified users within 90 days.

Regularly posting original content will also be required.

X said qualifying content could include videos, threads, memes, graphics, illustrations, reporting, analysis, commentary and reactions, provided they add meaningful value to conversations on the platform.

The company also clarified that creators can build on content created by others, but simply reposting it will not be enough. Users would need to add substantial commentary, context, analysis, humour or creative transformation.

Minor changes such as cropping, adding filters, borders, watermarks, changing playback speed or placing simple text over another person’s content will generally not qualify.

X also warned against copying content from other creators, downloading and re-uploading material from X or other platforms without being the original creator, automated posts, misinformation and misleading content.

Creators are responsible for obtaining the necessary rights and permissions when using material created by others.

The change signals X’s growing focus on original creators and content that can generate meaningful conversations. The platform says it wants to reward users who break news, share knowledge, tell stories, entertain audiences and provide useful perspectives.

For creators, the new system could make originality more important than simply generating large numbers of views. Those who consistently produce unique and valuable content will have a better chance of remaining eligible for rewards.

X said accounts that violate the programme’s rules could lose access temporarily or permanently, depending on the seriousness of the violation.
