ValueJet Takes Delivery of First Boeing 737NG to Expand Nigeria, West Africa Routes

Nigerian carrier ValueJet has taken delivery of its first Boeing 737NG aircraft, registered 5N-CFZ, the opening step in a planned three-aircraft rollout that will arrive over the coming months. The aircraft touched down on Wednesday, August 5, marking the start of a fleet expansion the airline says will extend its reach across Nigeria, West Africa and beyond.

The move represents a structural shift for ValueJet, which built its network on Bombardier CRJ regional jets since launching commercial operations in 2022. The Boeing 737NG offers substantially greater seating capacity and range than the CRJ fleet that has anchored the airline’s operations to date, positioning ValueJet to compete on trunk routes and longer-haul regional corridors previously out of reach.

Speaking on the delivery, ValueJet Managing Director Omololu Majekodunmi called the aircraft’s arrival the start of a new chapter for the carrier, saying it strengthens the airline’s ability to serve more passengers, carry more cargo, and support expansion across Nigeria and West Africa. He added that growth is being matched with investment in personnel and technical capability to sustain it responsibly.

The transition has been months in the making. Ahead of the delivery, ValueJet’s maintenance engineers underwent an intensive Boeing technical training programme in Lagos, delivered in partnership with Nigeria’s Federal Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development. The programme covered avionics, airframe, powerplant, electrical systems, maintenance procedures and safety protocols aligned with European Union Aviation Safety Agency standards, groundwork intended to ensure the carrier can maintain the new aircraft type to global benchmarks.

ValueJet’s leadership has also framed the shift in strategic rather than purely operational terms. Chairman Adekunle Soname described the introduction of Boeing aircraft as a strategic investment supporting the airline’s long-term growth ambitions, not simply a fleet expansion exercise.

For a domestic aviation market strained by fuel price volatility and carrier debt loads, ValueJet’s bet on larger, longer-range aircraft is a wager that scale and network breadth, not just route count, will determine which airlines consolidate market share as the sector resets.
