Nigeria’s transition toward cleaner urban transportation is set to gain momentum as CAWIN Mobility partners with Blue Camel Energy and Joint Sustainable Energy to deploy up to 500 electric vehicles (EVs) for ride-hailing operations across the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

The initiative, announced on June 29, 2026, will be supported by the construction of 10 solar-powered charging stations designed to provide reliable energy for the growing EV fleet. The project represents one of the country’s most significant integrated investments in electric mobility infrastructure and renewable-powered transportation.

The charging facilities will combine solar photovoltaic panels, battery energy storage systems and grid connectivity, ensuring uninterrupted vehicle charging despite Nigeria’s persistent electricity supply challenges. By reducing dependence on fossil fuels while improving charging reliability, the partners aim to lower operating costs for commercial drivers and improve the economics of electric mobility.

“This is a critical step toward sustainable urban mobility,” a CAWIN Mobility spokesperson said. “By combining locally assembled EVs with renewable energy, we are building a self-sufficient ecosystem.”

The rollout is scheduled to begin in the third quarter of 2026, with Abuja serving as the pilot market. Following the initial deployment, the consortium plans to expand its charging infrastructure to 30 stations across Lagos, Port Harcourt and Kano, extending the reach of electric transportation into some of Nigeria’s largest commercial centres.

Beyond vehicle deployment, the partnership includes the establishment of the Abuja Electric Vehicle Technical Excellence Centre. The facility will train mechanics, technicians and engineers in EV maintenance, battery management and related technologies, helping to address one of the industry’s biggest challenges, the shortage of skilled technical personnel. The centre is also expected to strengthen after-sales support while creating new employment opportunities within Nigeria’s emerging green economy.

Although the financial value of the investment was not disclosed, the project reflects growing private-sector confidence in Nigeria’s electric mobility market. Rising fuel costs, increasing environmental awareness and supportive government policies are encouraging businesses to explore cleaner transportation alternatives.

The announcement also aligns with Nigeria’s Energy Transition Plan, which seeks to accelerate the adoption of renewable energy technologies and reduce greenhouse gas emissions across key sectors of the economy. As investments in charging infrastructure and technical capacity expand, industry observers say initiatives such as this could improve investor confidence, stimulate local EV manufacturing and position Nigeria as a leading hub for sustainable transportation in West Africa.
