The All Farmers Association of Nigeria (AFAN) has applauded the Northern Governors Forum (NGF) for creating the Northern Security Trust Fund and approving a monthly contribution of N1 billion to improve security across the region.
According to the association, the new security initiative is an important step toward tackling insecurity, which has forced many farmers to abandon their farmlands over the years. AFAN believes the fund will help restore peace and encourage farmers to return to their fields.
AFAN National President, Muhammad Magaji Gettado, described the decision by the northern governors as a bold and timely move. He said the commitment to contribute N1 billion every month shows that the governors are serious about addressing the security challenges affecting communities across Northern Nigeria.
Gettado also welcomed the inauguration of the management board that will oversee the Security Trust Fund. He expressed confidence in the board members, saying they are people with good character, experience, and a strong reputation. He added that their leadership would ensure the fund is managed openly, responsibly, and for the benefit of the people.
The association explained that insecurity remains one of the biggest problems facing agriculture in the North. Incidents of bandit attacks, kidnappings, and violent crimes have prevented many farmers from cultivating their land, leading to lower food production and increasing pressure on food supplies across the country.
AFAN believes that improving security will allow farmers to return safely to their farms and increase agricultural activities. The association said this would help raise food production, reduce food shortages, stabilize food prices, and strengthen Nigeria’s overall food security.
Gettado expressed hope that the Security Trust Fund would make a real difference in protecting farming communities. He noted that once farmers feel safe again, they will be able to produce more crops, improve their incomes, and contribute to the country’s economic growth.
The association also called on farmers, cooperative societies, and community members across the northern states to support the initiative. AFAN urged them to work closely with security agencies by providing useful and reliable information that could help prevent criminal activities and improve safety in their communities.
In addition, AFAN reaffirmed its commitment to working alongside federal and state governments, security agencies, and other stakeholders to promote lasting peace and create an environment where agriculture can thrive.
The association stressed that improving security is essential for achieving food self-sufficiency in Nigeria. It added that with stronger collaboration between government, security agencies, and farmers, the country can overcome many of the challenges affecting food production and build a more secure and productive agricultural sector.
AFAN concluded by expressing optimism that the Northern Security Trust Fund will bring lasting benefits to farmers, rural communities, and the nation as a whole by supporting peace, boosting agricultural productivity, and strengthening Nigeria’s food supply.
