Guinness Nigeria reported that that Nigeria has grown into the third-largest market for the Guinness brand globally, ranking just behind Ireland and the United Kingdom.

This was disclosed in Lagos on Wednesday during a media briefing by the company’s Finance and Strategy Director, Mr Mayank Kabra.Kabra said Guinness has built a strong identity in Nigeria over its 76 years of operations, noting that many consumers now regard it as a local brand rather than an international one.

He explained that the company’s long presence in the country has helped it form deep cultural and emotional ties with consumers, which continues to support its market growth.“The most interesting thing for us is that Nigeria is the third-biggest market for Guinness globally after Ireland and the UK,” Kabra said.“Guinness has been part of this country for 76 years, and today many consumers see it as a Nigerian brand rather than an Irish one.”

He added that the company’s success is driven by its ability to understand consumer preferences and adjust its strategies to remain relevant in a highly competitive beverage industry.

“We have remained consistent in understanding our consumers and evolving with them. That connection is what continues to drive our growth in Nigeria,” he said.

Kabra also highlighted Guinness Nigeria’s strong focus on sports marketing, especially football, as a key engagement strategy. The company partners with global football brands such as the English Premier League and Arsenal Football Club. Through its “Match Day” activations, Guinness Nigeria connects with fans during live football experiences, using sports as a cultural bridge to engage consumers beyond just product consumption.

“Football remains a powerful cultural platform for us. Through our partnerships, we are able to connect with consumers in a way that goes beyond just the product,” Kabra noted. He explained that the company operates on key business pillars which include consumer focus, operational excellence, a winning culture, and strong financial performance. Guinness Nigeria is also investing in digital transformation, talent development, and portfolio expansion to ensure long-term sustainability. Speaking on governance, Mr Rotimi Odusola, Corporate Relations and Legal Director of Guinness Nigeria, reaffirmed the company’s commitment to transparency, accountability, and ethical business practices.

“Governance is very important to us. We operate with transparency, accountability and strict adherence to ethical standards,” he said. Odusola added that Guinness Nigeria was among the first companies certified under the Corporate Governance Rating Scheme of the Nigerian Exchange Limited (NGX), reflecting its strong compliance record.

He also noted the company’s social responsibility efforts, particularly its “Ember Months” road safety campaign carried out in collaboration with the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and the Lagos State Drivers’ Institute, aimed at promoting responsible drinking and safe road use during peak travel periods. On workforce development, Human Resource Director Mrs Ayodeji Ajibola said Guinness Nigeria is heavily investing in employee growth, leadership development, and workplace culture.

“Our people are at the centre of our transformation. We are deliberately investing in skills, leadership and performance culture,” she said.Ajibola noted that recent sales upskilling initiatives improved salesforce productivity by 11 per cent and boosted redistribution growth by 21 per cent.

She also highlighted the company’s Graduate Management Trainee programme and leadership training initiatives in partnership with Lagos Business School.

“We are building the next generation of leaders through structured development programmes and continuous learning,” she said. Ajibola further explained that the newly introduced “Voice Up” initiative provides employees with a safe platform to report concerns, strengthen inclusion, and promote workplace trust.
