The Federal Government has restated its commitment to improving electricity supply across Nigeria, with a major plan to increase power delivery in Ogun State by 480 megawatts.
The Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the Federal Government of Nigeria Power Company, Kenny Anuwe, said the administration of President Bola Tinubu is focused on strengthening the country’s power infrastructure to support economic growth. He explained that stable electricity remains critical to national development, prompting ongoing investments in the sector.
Anuwe made this known during an inspection of the new substation under construction in Abeokuta. The project, located in the Toolu community, is designed to complement the existing facility and significantly improve electricity supply across the state. According to him, the new substation will add about 480MW to the national grid, boosting energy availability for homes, businesses, and industries.
Speaking during the visit, he said, “We are here with our technical partners, Siemens Energy and OTS Engineering, to monitor the progress of work at our ongoing new Abeokuta substation, which is the flagship for phase one of the brownfield projects we’re implementing.”
He added, “So we’re here to review the work being done to upgrade the substation by about 480 megawatts. This is really significant in terms of the impact it will have on the grid, Nigerian businesses, homes, and commercial ventures.”
The project is part of a broader effort under the Presidential Power Initiative, which aims to modernise and expand Nigeria’s electricity infrastructure. Anuwe noted that the government had already added over 1,000MW to the national grid through the installation of mobile substations and transformers sourced from Siemens Energy.
He further explained that five brownfield substation projects are being executed across the country, including locations in Abeokuta, Ayede in Oyo State, Offa in Kwara State, Onitsha in Anambra State, and Sokoto. Collectively, these projects are expected to increase grid capacity by nearly 1,000MW.
On the timeline, Anuwe disclosed that civil construction work on the Abeokuta substation should be completed between June and July, after which electrical installations will begin. He expressed optimism that the project would be ready for commissioning before the end of 2026.
“Mr. President’s mandate to us is that we must commission this within 2026 to ensure Nigerians feel the impact of the electricity sector improvements,” he said.
Also speaking, the Chief Technical Officer of the FGN Power Company, Ebenezer Fapohunda, explained that the new facility would upgrade the existing transmission capacity from 132kV to 330kV. This upgrade is expected to improve power distribution and reduce the frequent outages currently experienced in Ogun State.
Fapohunda noted that the state largely depends on electricity supply from Ikeja West, which is often inadequate due to load shedding. He said the new substation would help address this challenge and provide more stable power.
In his remarks, the Project Director from Siemens Energy, Eli Akiki, confirmed that construction work is progressing according to schedule and that the team is committed to delivering the project on time.
Overall, the initiative is expected to strengthen Nigeria’s power grid, support businesses, and improve living conditions by ensuring more reliable electricity supply in Ogun State and beyond.
