The Delta State Executive Council has approved N10 billion to begin paying off pension debts carried over from past administrations. The decision was made during an EXCO meeting held when Governor Sheriff Oborevwori was away; Deputy Governor Sir Monday Onyeme presided in his absence.
At the meeting, the state’s Commissioner for Works (Rural Roads) and Public Information, Mr. Charles Aniagwu, informed journalists at Government House, Asaba, that the move fulfills “Governor Oborevwori’s promise to ease the hardship of pensioners and to defray inherited pension liabilities.”
Also present were the Commissioner for Economic Planning, Mr. Sonny Ekedayen, the Housing Commissioner Mr. Godknows Angele, and the Chief Press Secretary, Sir Festus Ahon.
Aniagwu added:
“At today’s meeting, we approved the disbursement of N10 billion to begin the process of defraying pension arrears. A committee has been set up to ensure the funds get to deserving beneficiaries without bias or interference.”
This step is part of the administration’s broader M.O.R.E Agenda and its efforts to improve life for senior citizens who served the state.
Besides pensions, the Council also reviewed major infrastructure projects. Notably, the timeframe for two flyovers was shortened: the Agbor Flyover’s completion target was cut from 24 to 18 months, and the Ughelli Flyover from 24 to 14 months, in a bid to speed up delivery and ease traffic.
The Council approved the termination of some poor-performing contracts and plans to re-award the Igbodo Junction‑Ubulu‑Uku to Ogwashi‑Uku Road to a more reliable contractor.
Also, a Staff of Office was approved for His Royal Majesty Engr Mike Oghenovo Orugbo, Okporua I, the Ovie of Udu Kingdom, following his recent installation.
Finally, the Council advanced fiscal preparations for the 2026 budget. The Commissioner for Economic Planning, Mr. Sonny Ekedayen, said the approved framework will soon go to the Delta State House of Assembly for enactment.
