As football fever continues to build ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, the United States government has launched a new visa initiative designed to help international supporters attend matches hosted across eleven cities in the country. The scheme, known as the FIFA Priority Appointment Scheduling System (FIFA PASS), will provide priority access to visa interview appointments for those who have already secured official tournament tickets, offering a welcome boost to fans facing lengthy waits at embassies and consulates worldwide.

Announced late last year by President Donald Trump in collaboration with football’s global governing body, FIFA, the FIFA PASS initiative aims to alleviate one of the most significant hurdles facing international visitors: long visa appointment backlogs. Under the new system, ticket holders for matches in the United States will be able to opt in to a prioritised scheduling process, allowing them to receive earlier visa interview slots than would be possible under the normal timeline.

The urgency of such a programme stems from historically long waiting times in several regions, where fans have sometimes faced appointment delays extending well beyond the tournament’s June kick-off. FIFA and US authorities have emphasised that the PASS system does not guarantee entry to the United States, but instead accelerates the appointment process so that travellers can complete their interviews in good time before the first whistle blows. In regions where interview slots had previously been limited, the FIFA PASS is expected to reduce waits significantly, sometimes to around 60 days, compared with many months previously.

For supporters from countries eligible for the US Visa Waiver Programme, the FIFA PASS is not essential; these travellers may instead apply for an Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA), which allows short-term entry without a traditional visa. However, for the millions of fans who must secure a B1/B2 visitor visa, priority appointment access could make the difference between attending matches and missing out.

At a White House event where the initiative was first unveiled, Trump was joined by FIFA President Gianni Infantino and other senior officials, including US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem. The collaboration between the White House Task Force on the FIFA World Cup 2026 and FIFA underscored both the scale of the logistical challenge and the United States’ commitment to making the tournament as accessible as possible to fans from around the world.

Infantino described the programme as a concrete example of the inclusive spirit that the 2026 World Cup seeks to embody, stressing that “America welcomes the world.” The first FIFA World Cup to feature 48 teams, the tournament is expected to attract millions of visitors, with over six million tickets anticipated to be made available across matches in the United States, Mexico and Canada.

Despite the optimism surrounding the visa initiative, officials have been at pains to manage expectations. Rubio reiterated that while appointment access would be expedited, every applicant must still undergo the standard visa vetting and security screening procedures required by US law. “Your ticket is not a visa,” he reminded would-be travellers; “it guarantees you an expedited appointment, but you must still demonstrate that you qualify and intend to abide by US immigration requirements.”

To handle the surge in applications anticipated with the world’s largest football tournament approaching, the State Department has also deployed hundreds of additional consular officers to embassies and consulates worldwide. In some high-demand markets, such as Brazil and Argentina, where visa waits stretched beyond a year, these staffing increases have already helped cut interview times dramatically.

The FIFA PASS initiative arrives amid broader discussions about visa policy in the United States. The country has recently paused the processing of immigrant visas for citizens of a number of nations, but the State Department has been at pains to clarify that this suspension applies only to immigrant visas and does not impact tourist or non-immigrant travel categories used by World Cup spectators. Consequently, football fans can still apply for visitor visas as normal, including through the prioritised scheduling system if they hold tickets.

As excitement around the 2026 World Cup intensifies, the introduction of FIFA PASS reflects the logistical scale of the event and the myriad practical challenges involved in hosting millions of international supporters. From managing stadium capacities to ensuring smooth entry procedures at airports and consulates, officials have been working to provide a seamless experience for the global audience expected to descend on the United States and its co-hosts.

Supporters eager to travel are being urged to begin their visa applications as early as possible. Early registration and timely submission of documents through FIFA PASS could help ensure that interview appointments are secured with sufficient lead time, particularly for fans from regions where consular demand is high. However, the fundamental eligibility criteria remain unchanged: applicants must still demonstrate ties to their home countries and satisfy the standard requirements under US immigration law.

With the countdown to kick-off well underway, the launch of the FIFA PASS is a significant milestone in the run-up to what promises to be one of the most eagerly awaited and widely attended World Cups in the sport’s history. Organisers hope that the initiative will help turn the dream of attending live matches into reality for fans from every corner of the globe.
