The Real Estate Developers Association of Nigeria (REDAN) has called for affordable long-term financing, improved infrastructure and faster land administration to accelerate housing delivery and attract investment into the country’s real estate sector.

REDAN President, Oba Akintoye Adeoye, made the call at the fifth Amadeo Business Summit 2026 in Enugu, according to a report published by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on October 8, 2026.

Adeoye said Nigeria’s housing challenge required more than increasing the number of homes built, stressing the need for an environment that enables developers to access affordable funding, investors to operate with confidence and homebuyers to obtain sustainable mortgage facilities.

“The challenge before us is not only to increase housing supply, but also to create an enabling environment where developers can access affordable and long-term finance,” Adeoye said, as quoted by NAN.

He called for stronger public-private partnerships, innovative financing mechanisms, improved land administration and predictable regulation to support sustainable housing development.

Access to affordable finance remains important to developers who must fund land acquisition, construction and other project costs before recovering their investments through property sales. Expensive borrowing can increase development costs and make completed homes less affordable.

Adeoye also identified access to serviced land and infrastructure deficits among the issues requiring urgent attention. Inadequate roads, electricity and other essential services can increase the cost of preparing land for residential development and discourage investment in locations with housing potential.

According to NAN’s October 8 report, the REDAN president urged stakeholders to address these constraints alongside challenges involving consumer protection and reliable housing data.

He said the South-East had significant potential for real estate investment, urban development and economic expansion if supported by an appropriate policy environment and strategic investment.

Adeoye also highlighted the importance of sound regulation and professional standards in creating a more predictable operating environment for property developers and investors.

The association’s position places responsibility on several stakeholders. Government agencies influence land administration, planning approvals and infrastructure provision, while developers, financial institutions and investors provide the expertise and capital needed to deliver housing projects.

Without coordination among these groups, funding constraints, infrastructure gaps and administrative delays can undermine development plans and raise costs.

Adeoye said the real estate sector could contribute to economic growth by creating jobs, attracting investment, supporting other businesses and building wealth in communities.

Nigeria’s housing shortage remains substantial. The Federal Ministry of Housing and Urban Development announced in January 2026 that the National Housing Data Technical Committee had estimated the country’s housing deficit at 14.925 million units in 2025.

The figure was reported by THISDAY on January 27, 2026, following the presentation of the committee’s findings at the 14th National Council on Lands, Housing and Urban Development.

REDAN’s call highlights the need to combine increased housing construction with affordable financing, serviced land and effective regulation to expand supply and improve access to homeownership.
