The Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) title race witnessed a significant shift during Matchday 35, held on April 19, 2026, as Enugu Rangers International surged back to the summit of the table. In a high-stakes “Oriental Derby” at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium, the Flying Antelopes came from behind to defeat Enyimba International 2–1. After Wonah Williams opened the scoring for the visitors shortly after the interval, Chidozie Iwundu leveled the score in the 61st minute before Ifeanyi Onyebuchi struck the decisive goal in the 68th minute. This victory propelled Rangers to 59 points, capitalising on a concurrent slip by their primary title rivals.

The shift in power was solidified in Kano, where Rivers United suffered a dramatic 2–1 defeat to Kano Pillars at the Sani Abacha Stadium. Despite a resilient effort from the Port Harcourt-based side which saw Abdullahi Musa level the score in the 81st minute—the hosts mounted a late comeback. Handsome Surveyor equalized in the 89th minute, and veteran Ahmed Musa fired home a deep stoppage-time winner to stun the visitors. The defeat leaves Rivers United in second place with 58 points, trailing the new leaders by a single point with only two rounds of matches remaining in the season.

The race for continental qualification remains equally competitive, as Abia Warriors secured a 2–1 victory over Ikorodu City. The result leaves both sides level on 55 points, though they remain separated by goal difference in the fight for third place. Shooting Stars also kept their aspirations alive with a gritty 2–1 away win against El-Kanemi Warriors, fueled by a Qamar Adegoke brace. Meanwhile, Nasarawa United strengthened their European hopes with a dominant 3–0 win over Warri Wolves at the Lafia City Stadium, continuing their push toward the top of the standings.

At the bottom of the league, the relegation battle remains fraught with tension. Bendel Insurance recorded a vital 2–1 away victory against Wikki Tourists, significantly compounding the latter’s survival woes. Elsewhere, Katsina United secured a narrow 3–2 win over Bayelsa United in a high-scoring encounter, while Remo Stars dismantled Niger Tornadoes 3–0 to consolidate their mid-table standing. Plateau United and Kun Khalifat FC shared the spoils in a 1–1 draw, and Kwara United earned a 2–1 victory over Barau FC.

As the league enters its final two matchdays, the pressure on club administrations to maintain operational and security standards has reached a critical juncture. The intensity of the competition is not only driving fan engagement but also highlighting the structural necessity for continued investment in infrastructure to support the league’s growing commercial footprint. For the Nigerian sporting ecosystem, the climax of the 2025/2026 season represents a vital test of the league’s resilience and its ability to provide a fair, transparent platform for the crowning of its champions.
