Patrice Motsepe, the billionaire founder of African Rainbow Minerals, has emerged as the frontrunner in South Africa’s ANC leadership race, despite his repeated denials of any political ambition.
A recent Social Research Foundation poll conducted among 2,222 respondents in March 2026 showed Motsepe leading with a 33.1% favourability rating, far ahead of his rivals, Secretary-General Fikile Mbalula (22%) and Deputy President Paul Mashatile (11.4%).
Motsepe’s negative rating of 22.3% is also significantly lower than Mbalula’s 37.7% and Mashatile’s 35%, highlighting his clean reputation amidst controversies surrounding his rivals.
Among ANC voters, Motsepe commands 47% support, compared to 19% for Mbalula and 16% for Mashatile.
A grassroots campaign, PM27 Savumelana, has been building support for Motsepe across South Africa’s provinces, although organisers insist he has no direct involvement.
The ANC has cautioned members against early campaigning, reaffirming that leadership discussions must take place within party processes.
Motsepe’s success in business and philanthropy, including his tenure as president of the Confederation of African Football, has contributed to his strong standing.
With the ANC’s 2027 elective conference approaching, the question remains whether Motsepe will be persuaded to run.
