The Federal Government has unveiled an ambitious plan aimed at equipping at least seven million Nigerian youths with a combination of vocational training and cutting-edge digital skills. This massive skills development initiative is central to the government’s strategy to tackle unemployment and foster self-reliance among the nation’s young population.

Comrade Ayodele Olawande, the Minister of Youth Development, announced the programme during a meeting with a delegation from the IHK Giessen-Friedberg Chambers of Commerce and Industry from Germany in Abuja. He emphasised that the initiative underscores the government’s commitment to providing practical, industry-relevant competencies that promote innovation and employability, aligning with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s broader economic agenda.

The Minister stressed that the government’s goal extends beyond merely filling existing vacancies. “Our goal is not just to produce job seekers but to nurture innovators and entrepreneurs who will contribute meaningfully to the nation’s economy,” Comrade Olawande stated.

To achieve this, the Ministry is establishing stronger partnerships with both German and Nigerian training institutions. A key component of the strategy involves launching a new digital learning platform under the Nigerian Youth Academy (NIYA). This platform, which will be modelled after global educational sites such as Coursera, is designed to make essential skill acquisition easily accessible to young Nigerians regardless of their geographical location. The Minister concluded, “This collaboration is not just about programmes; it is about building the future of our young people. Together, we can ensure that Nigerian youth are empowered, innovative, and globally competitive.”

The push for dual skills, combining hands-on technical trades with digital literacy, is seen as a crucial step for the Nigerian economy. This approach creates a workforce that is not only skilled in traditional vocations like plumbing or electrical work but is also capable of leveraging technology for marketing, logistics, and digital finance, thereby significantly boosting the productivity of the non-oil sector. Crucially, the focus on vocational expertise and digital competence is designed to reduce the nation’s high youth unemployment rate and increase the overall sophistication of the labour market.

The German partners confirmed their support for this vision. Dr. Matthias Leder, Chief Executive Officer of the IHK Giessen-Friedberg Chambers of Commerce and Industry, confirmed the Chambers’ commitment to vocational training and facilitating legal labour migration. He highlighted the success of the German dual training model, where apprentices begin to earn a wage from the very first day of their placement, praising this approach for its effectiveness. Dr. Leder also announced that as part of an ongoing bilateral project, three hundred Nigerian youths have already been selected for the Legal Labour Migration and Dual Vocational Training Project, set to be honoured soon after completing their A1 German language certification. He called for even stronger cooperation between Nigerian and German institutions to expand these opportunities, helping young people meet international labour standards and deepening bilateral economic relations. This training and subsequent legal migration pipeline provides an important economic outlet, allowing Nigeria to export highly-skilled labour and benefit from increased remittances.
