The Nigerian Association of Chambers of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture (NACCIMA) has taken a significant step towards deepening private sector engagement with China, following a high-level meeting in Abuja this week.

Zakirudeen Oladotun, NACCIMA’s newly appointed China Relations Executive, held discussions with Wang Yingqi, the Minister Counsellor at the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China, shortly after taking up his strategic role. The engagement, which also included Embassy Attaché Zhu Xuetao, focused on practical steps to expand bilateral economic cooperation and speed up Nigeria’s industrialisation agenda.

Mr Oladotun revealed that the conversation centred on key areas where Nigerian businesses can benefit from China’s vast industrial and innovation capacity. “Our conversation focused on aligning Nigeria’s private-sector ambitions with the vast opportunities within China’s industrial and innovation ecosystem, especially in manufacturing, agro-processing, the digital economy, technology transfer, and SME development,” he stated.

The meeting also examined emerging opportunities under the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC), which provides a formal framework for investment facilitation and capacity development across the continent. For his part, Minister Counsellor Wang Yingqi reaffirmed China’s commitment to strengthening ties and pledged deeper cooperation on initiatives that would support Nigeria’s aspiration of building a $1 trillion economy by 2030.

While such diplomatic efforts promise significant benefits, economic analysts caution that Nigeria must strategically manage the partnership to ensure mutual gain. Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) from China, often channelled into infrastructure and energy, is critical for boosting Nigeria’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP). However, analysts stress that the current trade relationship remains heavily unbalanced.

Experts point out that the high volume of relatively cheap imports from China, particularly in the manufacturing sector, has historically undermined the competitiveness of local Nigerian industries, stifling indigenous industrial growth and creating economic dependency.

Speaking on the challenge, a development economist noted that for the $1 trillion economy vision to be realised, the engagement must move beyond mere trading to genuine, reciprocal technology transfer and partnerships that actively build domestic production capacity, rather than just financing imports.

Mr Oladotun commended NACCIMA President Jani Ibrahim for his leadership, stating that his commitment to strategic partnerships “has created the enabling platform for engagements such as today’s meeting to thrive.” He reaffirmed that the Nigerian private sector must take a bold lead to move the nation closer to its industrial future.
