In a vibrant and insightful celebration held at Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN)’s South-West regional event hosted at Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH) in Lagos, the accounting profession was honoured and reaffirmed for its critical role in building transparent, accountable and sustainable financial systems.
The gathering brought together ICAN members, students and academics, all united to spotlight how accountants underpin business operations, governmental fiscal integrity and the broader economy. With thousands of accounting professionals celebrated globally, ICAN’s representative described them as “the unsung heroes behind the financial stability of businesses, governments, and communities.”
Tracing its roots back to the 1494 publication by Luca Bartolomeo de Pacioli on the double-entry bookkeeping system, the event underscored how the accounting profession continues to evolve – even as machines and analytics reshape the landscape. “Long before the age of artificial intelligence and analytics, the accountant’s pen was already shaping the course of human progress through discipline, accuracy, and integrity,” the ICAN president noted.
At the college, the Dean of the School of Management and Business Studies expressed pride that YABATECH was selected as the host institution, highlighting that 80% of the department’s lecturers are ICAN-fellows and emphasising the alignment of curriculum with global standards. He also announced that two students had recently qualified as full ICAN members, a sign of the institution’s academic rigour.
The rector addressed the assembly of budding accountants with a challenge: “Please, don’t leave your fate in the hands of anyone. When you make it, the college will celebrate you. But if you fail and give excuses, they become just stories. Stories are only good when packed with success.” He framed students as “the next generation of accountants who will form the backbone of successful businesses in Nigeria and around the world,” adding that “wherever there is accountability, accountants are indispensable.”
The event served not just to celebrate the profession but to recommit to its core values of ethics, accuracy and innovation, traits that are more vital than ever as Nigeria seeks to deepen its financial infrastructure and strengthen business resilience.
By promoting accountability and financial transparency, this celebration underscores how accountants help foster investor confidence and efficient resource allocation, vital in Nigeria’s push to stabilise revenues, reduce fiscal leakages and boost economic growth in a climate of inflation and debt stress.
