The Governor of Rivers State, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, has presented a proposed 2026 budget of N1.854 trillion to the Rivers State House of Assembly. The budget, titled “Budget of Resilience for Growth and Development,” is aimed at improving the economy, expanding infrastructure, and raising the standard of living for residents across the state.
While presenting the proposal in Port Harcourt on Friday, Governor Fubara explained that the budget was prepared after consultations with different groups and reflects the needs and expectations of the people of Rivers State. He described it as a roadmap for sustainable development and long-term economic progress.
According to the governor, N1.405 trillion has been set aside for capital projects, while N413.1 billionwill cover recurrent expenses such as salaries, government operations, and public services.
Fubara said the state’s expected revenue for 2026 is projected to rise by 24.49 percent compared to the adjusted 2025 budget. He attributed the increase to improved earnings from the Federation Account Allocation Committee (FAAC), derivation funds, and internally generated revenue, supported by positive signs in Nigeria’s economy.
The governor noted that the budget focuses on four major areas: economic growth, human capital development, infrastructure, and social welfare. He said these priorities are designed to strengthen the state’s economy, improve public services, and create more opportunities for residents.
Despite the challenges faced by his administration, Fubara stated that governance has remained stable. He highlighted achievements in road construction, education, healthcare, and security, adding that his government has maintained financial discipline through prudent management of public resources.
He assured residents that his administration would continue to spend public funds responsibly while attracting investments, creating jobs, and expanding economic opportunities across the state.
The largest share of the budget will go to the Works and Infrastructure sector, which received N533.32 billion for the construction, rehabilitation, and maintenance of roads and other public projects. Education was allocated N315 billion to improve schools and learning facilities, while the healthcare sector will receive N105.42 billion to strengthen medical services.
Other allocations include N19.25 billion for agriculture, N15 billion for power projects, N7.98 billionfor sports development, and N7 billion for youth empowerment. The Rivers State House of Assembly was allocated N41.43 billion, while the judiciary will receive N30 billion. Additional funding was also provided for women affairs, community development, and environmental sustainability.
Governor Fubara described the proposal as a people-focused budget that will bring development to every local government area and community in Rivers State. He said the administration remains committed to completing ongoing projects, investing in new infrastructure, improving education, and ensuring quality public services.
The governor also appealed to members of the Rivers State House of Assembly to support and approve the budget regardless of political differences. He urged lawmakers to work together in the interest of the state, saying unity is essential to accelerate development and improve the lives of Rivers people.
