The Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) entered a critical phase over the weekend of March 21 and 22, 2026, as Matchday 31 fixtures reshaped the summit of the table. In a high-stakes encounter at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium, Enugu Rangers International secured a decisive 2-0 victory over El-Kanemi Warriors. This result, combined with favorable outcomes elsewhere, propelled the “Flying Antelopes” to the top of the standings with 54 points. For the Nigerian economy, the continued vibrancy of the NPFL serves as a vital catalyst for the local sports industry, driving commercial activity in hospitality, security, and retail sectors across various match venues.

The standout performance of the weekend occurred at the Sani Abacha Stadium, where Kano Pillars dismantled Enyimba International with a convincing 2-0 win. The match was defined by the evergreen brilliance of Rabiu Ali, popularly known as “Pele,” who provided two assists. His first set up Chidozie Okorie in the 11th minute, while his second allowed former Super Eagles captain Ahmed Musa to double the lead with a powerful strike in first-half stoppage time. This victory was instrumental for Pillars, moving them further away from the relegation zone. From a business journalism perspective, the presence of high-profile veterans like Musa continues to enhance the league’s brand equity, attracting greater domestic viewership and potential sponsorship interest.

In other notable results, Remo Stars solidified their position with a 3-1 win over Kwara United at the Remo Stars Stadium in Ikenne. Plateau United also secured a slim 1-0 victory against Bayelsa United in Jos, while Katsina United triumphed by the same margin over Shooting Stars SC. Meanwhile, the encounter between Kun Khalifat FC and Ikorodu City ended in a 2-2 draw, showcasing the competitive depth of the league’s emerging teams. These matches underscore the decentralised economic impact of the league, where each fixture generates temporary employment and stimulates micro-economies within the host communities.

The weekend’s action remained incomplete due to scheduled Monday fixtures. Abia Warriors were set to host Niger Tornadoes, while Nasarawa United faced a formidable challenge against Rivers United. The outcome of the Nasarawa-Rivers clash remains particularly pivotal, as Rivers United currently sit in second place with 52 points and a game in hand. A victory for the Port Harcourt-based side could see them reclaim the top spot, further intensifying a title race that has become a three-way battle between Rangers, Rivers United, and a surging Ikorodu City.

As the 2025/2026 season approaches its final six matchdays, the stakes for continental qualification and top-flight survival have never been higher. The professional management of these fixtures and the increasing reliability of match data reflect a maturing sporting ecosystem that is becoming more attractive to institutional investors. The NPFL’s ability to maintain this momentum will be crucial for the long-term growth of Nigeria’s creative and sporting economy, providing a structured platform for talent export and infrastructure development.
