Transcorp Hotels Plc, the hospitality subsidiary of Transnational Corporation Plc (Transcorp Group), has announced a significant change in its leadership structure with the appointment of Dr. Awele Vivien Elumelu as the new Chairman of the company. Her appointment is scheduled to take effect from January 1, 2026, following the retirement of the incumbent chairman, Mr. Emmanuel N. Nnorom, on the same date.
The transition marks a new chapter for Transcorp Hotels, a premium brand in Nigeria’s hospitality sector known for properties like the Transcorp Hilton Abuja and Transcorp Hotels Calabar.
Dr. Awele Elumelu brings a diverse and impressive track record spanning healthcare, insurance, corporate governance, and philanthropy to her new role. A medical doctor by training, she holds an MBBS from the University of Benin and has accumulated clinical experience both in Nigeria and the United Kingdom. Her medical background is bolstered by extensive executive education from prestigious global institutions, including Harvard Business School, IMD Switzerland, and the London School of Economics.
Her current leadership positions are numerous and varied. She serves as the chairman of Avon Healthcare Limited (Avon HMO), a prominent health insurance provider in Nigeria, and Avon Medical Practice, a growing network of healthcare facilities. Furthermore, she chairs Heirs Insurance Brokers and is a founding Director of Heirs Holdings Limited, a pan-African investment company.
In addition to her corporate responsibilities, Dr. Elumelu is deeply engaged in social impact as a Trustee and Co-Founder of the Tony Elumelu Foundation. This foundation is Africa’s leading philanthropy dedicated to empowering young entrepreneurs. Through her work at the Foundation, she has been instrumental in advocating for gender inclusion and has helped to support more than 24,000 young African men and women with seed capital, training, and mentorship.
Commenting on the appointment, Mr. Tony O. Elumelu, Group Chairman of the Transcorp Group, expressed confidence in the new leadership. He stated that Dr. Awele Elumelu’s distinguished track record aligns perfectly with the Group’s mission “to redefine hospitality through innovation, wellness integration, and responsible business practices.” He anticipates that her strategic insight will be invaluable as the company continues to elevate guest experiences and deliver sustainable value to all stakeholders.
The retirement of Mr. Emmanuel Nnorom concludes a period of service during which Transcorp Hotels expanded its footprint and achieved significant financial milestones, including a record profit driven by a boom in the hospitality sector. The incoming chairman is expected to leverage her experience in diverse, regulated industries to steer Transcorp Hotels into its next phase of growth and strategic development.
