Dangote Transport has strengthened its road safety efforts with the launch of a Driver Monitoring Control Room at its operational base in Ibese, Ogun State.
The new facility is designed to monitor truck drivers in real time and help the company quickly identify dangerous driving behaviour before it leads to accidents.
The monitoring centre forms part of Dangote Transport’s wider strategy to improve safety across its large fleet of trucks operating in different parts of Nigeria.
According to the company’s Head of Operations in Ibese, David Idiege, the facility is one of the latest additions to its safety systems and reflects the company’s continued investment in technology, training and driver welfare.
He explained that Dangote Transport is constantly looking for new ways to improve road safety, reduce accidents and ensure that its drivers and other road users are protected.
The company said safety remains a major priority because of the risks associated with operating a large commercial vehicle fleet across the country.
The new monitoring system gives transport managers access to live information about what is happening inside trucks while they are travelling. This allows the company to identify risky behaviour and take action when necessary.
Dangote Transport said its safety programme goes beyond the use of technology. Over the years, the company has introduced several measures aimed at improving driver performance and reducing road accidents.
These measures include speed limiters, vehicle immobilisers, speed control systems, facial recognition technology and journey management procedures.
Drivers are also subjected to mandatory drug and alcohol tests, compulsory rest periods, regular training and periodic recertification to ensure they remain qualified and fit to operate heavy-duty vehicles.
Idiege said the company’s approach combines technology with proper procedures and driver support. He stressed that preventing driver fatigue is particularly important because tired drivers may have slower reactions and make poor decisions on the road.
Under the company’s journey management policy, drivers are required to follow specific rest schedules before continuing their trips.
The Head of Transport Control, Ifeanyi Ezeala, who took journalists around the facility, said thousands of Dangote trucks have been equipped with onboard camera systems developed with technology partner Nova Tracks.
The cameras provide live feeds and generate alerts when potentially dangerous driving behaviour is detected. Transport managers can then contact drivers and provide immediate guidance.
Ezeala explained that the system is not intended to punish drivers. Instead, it is designed to prevent accidents by identifying risks early and helping drivers make safer decisions.
Beyond safety, the technology is also expected to improve Dangote’s fleet management. Data collected from the trucks can help managers understand driving patterns, improve operations and make better decisions.
The company believes that technology will become increasingly important in managing large transport fleets as Nigeria continues to face road safety challenges.
The Driver Monitoring Control Room is therefore part of Dangote Transport’s broader investment in safer and more efficient transportation operations.
With thousands of trucks moving goods across Nigeria, the company says combining real-time monitoring, driver training, proper rest and strict safety procedures will help reduce accidents and create safer roads for both commercial drivers and other road users.
