The Dangote Group has firmly dismissed claims suggesting a disagreement between its founder, Aliko Dangote, and Tony Elumelu, describing such reports as false and misleading. The company issued this clarification following the circulation of a viral post on social media that alleged a fallout between the two prominent business figures. The post claimed that Dangote had previously sought financial support from associates during the construction of the refinery project and that Elumelu had initially agreed to assist but later cut off communication.
Reacting to the claims, the group made it clear that the story was fabricated and had no basis in reality. According to the company, “At no time did the president or the group make such statements or express such sentiments.” The organisation stressed that its founder does not rely on personal borrowing from friends to fund major projects. It described the allegation that the refinery development was financed through such means as inaccurate and misleading. In its words, “The group categorically rejects claims that the development of the Dangote Petroleum Refinery & Petrochemicals was financed through personal borrowing from friends.”
The company further challenged anyone making such assertions to provide verifiable evidence to support them. It maintained that the claims distort facts and misrepresent how large-scale industrial projects are financed.
Addressing the alleged relationship breakdown, the group was unequivocal in its denial. It stated that “Equally false are suggestions of any estrangement between Aliko Dangote and Mr Tony Elumelu, with whom he maintains a longstanding and cordial relationship.” The clarification highlights that both business leaders continue to share a strong professional and personal rapport, contrary to the narrative being circulated online.
In addition, the company expressed concern about the growing spread of false information, particularly content generated or amplified through digital platforms. It noted a rising trend of misleading posts using Dangote’s name, image, and reputation without authorisation. The group warned individuals and organisations responsible for creating or sharing such content to desist immediately. It added that it is prepared to take legal action where necessary to protect its brand and leadership from reputational damage. This development comes amid heightened scrutiny of online information, especially when it involves high-profile individuals and major business projects. The Dangote Group emphasised its commitment to transparency, integrity, and responsible communication, noting that misinformation can undermine public trust.
Despite the controversy, the company reaffirmed its focus on driving industrial growth and economic development across Africa. It reiterated that its operations and strategic projects remain on track, undistracted by unfounded rumours. Overall, the statement serves as both a rebuttal to the viral claims and a broader warning against the dangers of spreading unverified information in the digital age.
