Borno Government Disburses ₦706.5 Million in Scholarships

In a renewed commitment to education and youth development, Babagana Umara Zulum, governor of Borno State, has approved ₦706.5 million for scholarships benefiting a broad range of students across the state.

The funds cover multiple categories of beneficiaries. These include orphans of fallen members of the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF), undergraduates at institutions such as Federal University of Health Sciences, Azare and Al-Ansar University, Maiduguri, repatriated students returning from Sudan, nursing students preparing for professional exams, and postgraduate students in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) enrolled in universities across Nigeria.

The announcement was made by the Executive Secretary of the state’s Scholarship Board, who explained that the disbursement will be carried out immediately. He emphasized that this initiative reflects the administration’s broader mission to support education, foster human capital development, and ensure that no student will be left behind.

This latest scholarship allocation builds on substantial previous investments by Borno State. In 2024 alone, the government reportedly spent more than ₦9.7 billion on student scholarships, benefitting tens of thousands of undergraduates and postgraduates pursuing courses in science, medicine, engineering and other critical fields.

The focus of these scholarships remains sharply on fields deemed vital for rebuilding after years of insurgency: STEM disciplines, healthcare, and other sectors that can drive reconstruction, innovation, and sustainable development in Borno. This comes alongside broader state investments in school infrastructure, teacher recruitment, and efforts to reduce the number of out-of-school children in the region.

“300 orphans of fallen heroes … 206 students at Federal University of Health Sciences, Azare … 34 students at Al-Ansar University … plus nursing and STEM postgraduates” are among those receiving support, demonstrating the extensive reach of the scheme.

Importantly, this is not a one-off gesture but part of a sustained educational strategy by the Zulum administration. The repeated approvals of large scholarship sums underscore a long-term vision in which education is central to rebuilding human capacity, restoring hope, and creating opportunities for Borno’s youth.

Investing ₦706.5 million in scholarships could yield long-term economic dividends by building a skilled workforce ready to contribute to rebuilding efforts in Borno. Educated graduates in STEM, healthcare, and other critical fields are more likely to enter productive sectors, boosting innovation, employment, and regional economic recovery.
