The Adamawa State Government has approved N2.198 billion for the purchase of 46,300 bags of assorted fertiliser to support dry season farming across the state. The approval was made during the 13th State Executive Council meeting chaired by Governor Ahmadu Fintiri in Yola. The fertiliser procurement formed part of about N5 billion worth of contracts and procurements approved by the council for various development projects and interventions.

According to Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Leader Leneke, the fertiliser will help farmers continue production during the dry season and make it possible for them to take advantage of both major farming periods.

“The Adamawa government has approved contracts and procurements for development projects across the state worth N5 billion.”

He added that N2.198 billion had specifically been approved for 46,300 bags of assorted fertiliser for dry season farming. The state government also approved N78.952 million for the purchase of herbicides and pesticides. The additional inputs are expected to provide farmers with the materials needed to protect their crops and maintain production beyond the rainy season. The latest intervention comes as farmers across Nigeria continue to deal with the high cost of agricultural inputs. Fertiliser, chemicals, seeds, fuel and other production expenses have increased the amount farmers need to spend before bringing their products to market.

For Adamawa farmers, access to fertiliser during the dry season could therefore help reduce some of the pressure associated with production and support continued cultivation when rainfall is no longer available. The state has also introduced other measures to make fertiliser more accessible to farmers. In July, Adamawa launched a 50 percent subsidy programme for fertiliser for the 2026 rainy season, with the government saying the initiative was designed to reduce production costs and improve agricultural output.

Beyond agriculture, the State Executive Council approved several other projects at its latest meeting. The council approved N1.752 billion for office blocks at the Adamawa State Post Primary Schools Management Board in Yola. It also approved N627.696 million for roads, drainage and other internal infrastructure at the Mega Science and Technical Secondary School in Hong. Another N381.656 million was approved for consulting services connected to the proposed counter terrorism base in Madagali.

According to the commissioner, the Hong project is part of the state’s plan to establish Mega Science and Technical Secondary Schools across its three senatorial districts, while the Madagali project is expected to strengthen security in the area. The council also renewed the state’s mining licence and directed relevant authorities to intensify flood awareness following warnings from the National Emergency Management Agency and the Nigerian Meteorological Agency. Residents in communities likely to be affected by flooding were advised to remain alert and move to safer locations when necessary. Authorities also urged residents to report unfamiliar persons and suspected criminals to security agencies.

The fertiliser approval, however, remains one of the more significant decisions for the agricultural sector, particularly as the government seeks to maintain food production throughout the year. The intervention also fits into broader efforts by the Federal Government to improve access to fertiliser and strengthen food security. In 2026, the Federal Government said it was working towards delivering 1.1 million metric tonnes of fertiliser to farmers as part of efforts to improve agricultural productivity.

For Adamawa, the immediate focus will be on getting the approved fertiliser to farmers and ensuring that the intervention translates into increased production during the dry season.
