In a major move to unlock the industrial potential of Ogun State’s coastal region, Governor Dapo Abiodun has approved the construction of the J4-Gao Road in Ogun Waterside Local Government Area. The project forms a critical pillar of the state government’s overarching infrastructure blueprint, designed to boost connectivity, improve regional logistics, and support multi-billion-dollar investments slated for the maritime axis.
Speaking at an All Progressives Congress (APC) stakeholders’ engagement meeting in Ibiade, Abiodun stressed that the strategic location of Ogun Waterside makes it a natural hub for the state’s emerging industrial ecosystem. Addressing party members and community leaders, the governor acknowledged the prolonged infrastructural neglect the area suffered under previous administrations and reaffirmed his government’s resolve to transform the corridor into a thriving economic gateway.
Adding momentum to the state’s development drive, Abiodun revealed that the Federal Government has approved a four-kilometre bridge linking Ogun Waterside directly to the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway. This critical link will significantly improve accessibility for local communities while integrating Ogun’s eastern coast into one of West Africa’s most ambitious commercial transport corridors.
Together, the newly approved J4-Gao Road and the federal bridge project will serve as primary access routes for two flagship developmental megaprojects: the Gateway Deep Sea Port and the Olokola Liquefied Natural Gas (OKLNG) facility. Highlighting the project timelines, Abiodun disclosed that the official groundbreaking ceremony for the Gateway Deep Sea Port is scheduled for November 2026. Heavy construction work is set to commence before the end of the year, with full project completion targeted for 2030.
The latest road approval builds on commitments made earlier this year. During the commissioning of the reconstructed Gao-Ibiade Road, the governor pledged to extend infrastructure upgrades to the J4-Gao route and rehabilitate the remaining segment connecting to Abigi, the local government headquarters.
By linking key inland communities directly to maritime and transport hubs, the administration aims to facilitate seamless movement for goods and residents, sparking long-overdue economic revitalization across the region. However, details regarding the J4-Gao Road’s total contract value, assigned contractor, exact mileage, and completion timeline are yet to be made public by state authorities.
