United Bank for Africa (UBA) has announced the death of Israel Ogbue, a former chairman of the bank, who passed away at the age of 99.

In a statement issued on Thursday, UBA said Ogbue “passed on peacefully,” describing him as a “revered boardroom statesman and distinguished administrator.”

Ogbue is the father of Awele Elumelu, chairman of Transcorp Hotels, and the father-in-law of Tony Elumelu, group chairman of UBA Group.

The bank said Ogbue played a key role during a major period in UBA’s evolution, noting that he provided “steady and principled leadership” while strengthening governance standards, accountability and long-term sustainability. Ogbue joined UBA’s board in 2005 as a non-executive director and later became chairman in 2011. He retired from the role in 2013, according to the bank.

Tracing his professional journey, UBA said: “Born on February 18, 1927, in Onicha-Olona, Delta state, Ogbue began his career in the federal civil service before travelling to the United Kingdom for further studies.”

It added: “He built an accomplished career that saw him rise through senior management ranks at the National Insurance Corporation of Nigeria (NICON), where he served with distinction until his retirement in 1988. His reputation for governance expertise subsequently earned him appointments to the boards of several leading institutions, including UBA.”

Beyond the boardroom, UBA described Ogbue as a family patriarch who often credited his long life to God’s grace. The bank said he also encouraged younger people to pursue ambition carefully and stay resilient through adversity.

“UBA Group extends its heartfelt condolences to his children, grandchildren, extended family, friends and associates,” the bank said.

The bank said funeral arrangements will be communicated by Ogbue’s family at a later date.
