A Mombasa High Court has postponed a Ksh90 million ($703,000) lawsuit against Grain Bulk Handlers Limited, a grain handling company associated with businessman Mohammed Jaffer.

The case, filed by Mombasa Maize Millers, alleges breach of contract involving grain supplies.

The hearing was adjourned to May 7 due to witness unavailability and lawyer illness.

The dispute highlights Bulkstream’s dominant position in Kenya’s grain handling industry, sparking complaints about costs and delays. New players, like Portside Freight Terminals, are emerging to challenge this monopoly.

In fact, the Supreme Court recently ruled in favor of Jaffer, nullifying a Sh5.8 billion grain handling facility deal awarded to Portside Freight Terminals, citing constitutional procurement procedure violations.

Jaffer’s business empire faces mounting challenges, including a bitter rivalry with the Joho family and a lost monopoly on LPG handling.

Despite these challenges, he secured a temporary reprieve with a court victory over land compensation.
