United Bank for Africa (UBA) Plc, known as Africa’s Global Bank, has rolled out a fully digital instant account opening platform that allows customers in Africa and the diaspora to open bank accounts entirely online without paperwork or branch visits, marking a significant advance in convenience and accessibility. The new solution reflects UBA’s drive to make banking faster, more user-friendly, and borderless for millions of prospective clients across its wide footprint.

The onboarding process on the platform is simple: prospective customers access the service through the web, choose their preferred country and language, and complete the entire account opening journey via computers, tablets, or smartphones, ensuring a consistent and intuitive experience across devices. Once users upload their documents and complete digital KYC requirements, they can receive their account number instantly, bringing the speed typically associated with fintech into a full bank setting.

“At UBA, we are committed to redefining the customer experience through innovation and simplicity. Our new Instant Account Opening platform reflects this commitment by removing traditional barriers and making it easy for anyone, whether on the continent or in the diaspora, to open an account in minutes. This fully digital solution underscores our belief that banking should be accessible, secure, and truly borderless.” Shamsideen Fashola, Group Head, Retail and Digital Banking, said.

The platform supports both Naira and Diaspora accounts and offers multi-language options that mirror UBA’s diverse customer base and pan-African footprint. Built on strong privacy and compliance foundations, it aligns with regulations like the Nigeria Data Protection Act (NDPA) and the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) to maintain robust data protection and customer confidence.

“We understand that today’s customers expect speed, convenience, and compliance without compromise. With this platform, we have blended industry-leading digital onboarding with robust privacy and regulatory standards, ensuring that our retail customers enjoy a seamless account opening experience that matches global best practices.” Alero Ladipo, Group Head, Brand, Marketing and Corporate Communication, said.

UBA’s new instant account opening platform bridges the gap between traditional bank onboarding, often slowed by paperwork, branch visits, and in-person biometric requirements and the fast, digital-first experience customers increasingly expect in the modern economy. It allows users to upload all necessary identification materials, complete verification procedures digitally, and seamlessly enroll in UBA’s digital channels, all without stepping foot in a physical branch.

This initiative bolsters UBA’s broader digital transformation strategy, which also includes innovations like its AI chatbot LEO being enabled for cross-border payments via the Pan-African Payment and Settlement System (PAPSS), a move that supports seamless transfer of funds across African markets.

Economically, easier access to formal banking through digital onboarding can deepen financial inclusion by lowering the barriers to entry for individuals and small businesses, expanding customer participation in formal financial systems, and potentially stimulating savings, investment, and intra-regional commerce across African markets.

The launch reinforces UBA’s leadership in digital banking and financial inclusion while extending its mission to democratize access to financial services for underserved populations. With operations in 20 African countries and international markets including the United Kingdom, United States, France, and the United Arab Emirates, serving over 50 million customers worldwide, UBA’s move toward fully digital account opening underscores its commitment to innovation that meets the needs of a global, digitally connected clientele.
