The Lagos Polo Club has officially set the stage for one of Africa’s most prestigious sporting and social events with the announcement of the 2026 NPA Lagos International Polo Tournament. Scheduled to run from Tuesday, January 27 to Sunday, February 15, 2026, the three-week festival will once again bring elite polo competition and high society flair to the historic Ikoyi grounds in Lagos.

For more than a century, the Lagos Polo Club has stood as a cornerstone of West Africa’s sporting heritage, blending competitive equestrian action with a vibrant social calendar. Founded in 1904, the club has nurtured generations of polo talent and hosted dignitaries, corporate leaders and international guests, reinforcing Lagos’ reputation as a global hub for sport, culture and networking.

The 2026 NPA Lagos International Polo Tournament will feature top-tier competition, with close to 30 teams, about 120 players and more than 480 horses expected to take part in a packed schedule of matches. According to Usman Dantata, the tournament manager, the broad and diverse field of participants underscores the growing appeal and competitive depth of the event. Organisers are planning a safe and seamless experience, with comprehensive security, crowd control and logistics protocols in place for players, horses and spectators alike.

At the official press briefing, Adeyemo Alakija, President of the Lagos Polo Club, called the 2026 edition “a landmark tournament,” marking his first as president. Alakija expressed excitement about the quality of play and the social calendar that accompanies the sport each year, promising polo action, camaraderie and a full line-up of festivities that blend athleticism with cultural exchange.

The tournament’s competitive structure will showcase a rich variety of trophy events designed to test skill, strategy and equestrian excellence. Among these are the highly anticipated Heritage Cup, the Oba of Lagos Cup, the Cancer Awareness Bowl and the Governors Cup, each carrying its own prestige and tradition. These cups not only heighten the competitive stakes but also celebrate the deep institutional partnerships and historical legacy that the Lagos Polo Club has cultivated over decades.

Beyond the core matches, the Lagos International Polo Tournament has long been celebrated as so much more than a sporting event. It is a social fixture where corporate leaders, diplomats, cultural tastemakers and polo patrons converge to enjoy elite competition and network in an atmosphere of sophistication and camaraderie. In recent years, the tournament has helped elevate Lagos’ hospitality and tourism sectors, attracting both local and international visitors who come to witness thrilling chukkas and partake in off-field events.

The significance of the event resonates particularly with Lagos’ dynamic cultural scene, which embraces tradition and modernity alike. From refined social gatherings and gala receptions to high-energy matches and family-friendly festivities, the polo tournament acts as a locus where sport intersects with lifestyle, fashion and business. It also gives rising local stars a platform to compete with seasoned internationals, reinforcing Nigeria’s position on the global polo circuit.

Sponsorship plays a central role in powering the tournament. The 2026 edition is backed by a broad coalition of high-profile sponsors, including GTCO, Arbico, Chapel Hill Denham, American Express, Veuve Clicquot, Brithomes & Hill International, Mota-Engil Nigeria, Dangote, IHS Towers, CardinalStone, and Mainstreet Capital, among others. These partnerships reflect deep confidence in the tournament’s capacity to generate visibility, engagement and impact both within and beyond Nigeria’s borders.

Organisers expect that the tournament will once again be a highlight of the 2026 sporting calendar. Whether through intense competition on the field, elegant social events off it, or the unique cultural exchange that characterises the festival, the Lagos International Polo Tournament continues to blend history, sport and cosmopolitan vibrancy in a way that few events on the continent do.

As anticipation builds among players, sponsors and spectators, Lagos prepares to welcome a grand celebration of polo excellence where tradition meets spectacle, and the rhythmic gallop of horses on manicured grass heralds another chapter in the storied history of African sport.
