Nigeria’s First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, has called for urgent steps to address the global shortage of teachers. She made this call in a message to mark World Teachers’ Day 2025, celebrated every year on October 5.
Speaking on the theme of this year’s event, “Focusing on the Global Teacher Shortage,” Mrs. Tinubu said the world is facing a serious problem that needs immediate attention. She stressed that more efforts are needed to support teachers and attract more people into the profession.
“The shortage of teachers is a challenge we must confront with urgency, by empowering educators, investing in their growth, and inspiring more to join this noble profession,” she said.
Mrs. Tinubu, who was a teacher herself, praised teachers for their vital role in shaping young minds and building the nation. She described them as “true heroes, shaping minds, nurturing dreams, and guiding generations.”
She also used the opportunity to thank teachers for their hard work and dedication. “As a lifelong teacher myself, I salute you all on this Special Day,” she added.
The First Lady urged government leaders, education stakeholders, and society at large to make education a top priority by improving teacher training, providing better working conditions, and recognizing the importance of their work.
World Teachers’ Day is celebrated globally to recognize the contributions of teachers and to promote education as a key part of national development. The 2025 theme draws attention to the need for more teachers worldwide and encourages policies that will help strengthen the teaching profession.
