Wema Bank Plc has unveiled a major upgrade to its flagship digital banking platform, ALAT by Wema, setting a new benchmark for mobile banking experiences in Nigeria and across Africa. Tagged “ALAT: The Evolution,” this overhaul brings a suite of intelligent features designed to make banking faster, easier, and more reliable for customers, whether they’re individuals or businesses.
At its core, the upgrade expands ALAT’s capabilities beyond traditional mobile banking with tools that respond to how people actually use their phones today. By embedding voice banking, tap-to-pay contactless transactions, and predictive uptime insights, Wema Bank is pushing forward the convenience, accessibility, and reliability of digital financial services.
Voice banking, powered by the Smart ALAT Voice assistant (SAW) lets customers manage accounts, transfer funds, pay bills, and get balances simply by speaking commands, making banking hands-free and intuitive. This feature particularly benefits users who are on the go or have accessibility needs.
The Tap & Pay contactless feature introduces near-field communication (NFC) payments directly from the app, allowing quick and secure purchases at point-of-sale terminals without inserting cards, reducing friction at checkout.
Perhaps most innovatively, ALAT now includes uptime prediction tools that forecast when the app’s services will be most available. This transparency helps users plan their transactions and avoid peak downtime periods, boosting confidence and trust in the platform.
Moruf Oseni, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Wema Bank, emphasized that this isn’t just a facelift but a strategic leap forward. “ALAT: The Evolution is more than an upgrade. It is a clear demonstration of our commitment to redefining digital banking in Africa.” Existing customers can seamlessly update the app through app stores without losing their account history or login details, while new customers can onboard quickly and easily.
Behind these user-centric upgrades is a broader vision: creating a digital bank that is adaptive, intelligent, and consistently available. According to the bank’s Chief Digital Officer, these enhancements reflect a long-term mission to tailor financial tools to real needs through powerful technology and user-first design.
Importantly, this upgrade doesn’t happen in a vacuum. Wema Bank’s digital platforms have been key drivers of the bank’s recent financial momentum. In 2025, the bank recorded notable growth in profitability and asset base, supported in part by expanding digital revenues and a growing retail customer base, factors that strengthen its competitive position ahead of industry recapitalisation deadlines.
Economically, the enhanced ALAT app could further accelerate Nigeria’s digital payment ecosystem, potentially reducing transaction costs and encouraging cashless activity, which has been shown in other markets to increase business formalisation, improve tax revenue, and contribute to GDP growth.
Ultimately, Wema’s upgraded ALAT is not just about flashy features, it represents a strategic commitment to technological leadership, customer satisfaction, and economic participation in a rapidly evolving financial landscape. By integrating voice commands, contactless payments, and predictive service insights, the bank is helping reshape how Nigerians and, eventually, Africans, interact with digital finance.
