US Places Partial Travel Restrictions on Nigerians Over Security, Visa Overstay Concerns

The United States Embassy in Abuja has assured visa holders that all valid visas issued before 1 January 2026 will remain in force, despite new travel restrictions set to take effect at the start of next year. This clarification comes as the US government prepares to introduce tighter entry controls affecting citizens of Nigeria and other countries.

The embassy’s statement was released after concerns spread that existing visas might be cancelled or lose their validity. The Federal Government of the United States has announced a presidential proclamation that will partially suspend the issuance of certain visas from 1 January, citing border security and public safety as reasons for the policy change. However, the mission stressed that visas granted before that date will not be withdrawn as a result of the new rules.

Under the planned restrictions, some categories of visitor, student, exchange and immigrant visas may not be issued to nationals of Nigeria and several other countries if applications are made on or after 1 January 2026. But applicants who already hold valid visas at the time will retain their documents and can continue to travel to the United States under the terms of those visas.

The US ambassador to Nigeria has also sought to reassure the public, saying the measures are not targeted at Nigerians specifically but are part of broader efforts to improve visa vetting and security procedures. Officials emphasised that exceptions exist, for example for lawful permanent residents, dual nationals and holders of certain special immigrant visas.

The announcement appears to respond to widespread anxiety among travellers, students and families planning trips early next year. Many Nigerians hold US visas for work, study, tourism or family visits, and uncertainty over travel rules had raised fears that longstanding travel plans could be disrupted. With the clarification now issued, holders of existing visas can be confident that their documents remain valid under the current terms.

The new travel limits are part of a wider set of immigration changes announced by the US government recently. These include expanded travel bans and partial entry suspensions for several countries, driven by concerns over immigration policy compliance and visa overstay rates.

Overall, the US Embassy’s assurance offers relief to many who had feared losing their travel rights at the start of 2026, even as fresh rules take effect.
