The Federal Government of Nigeria has officially declared Thursday, December 25, Friday, December 26, 2025, and Thursday, January 1, 2026 as national public holidays in observance of Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day respectively.

According to the announcement released on Monday by the Ministry of Interior, the festive season will be marked as work-free days across the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory. These dates are now legally recognised as statutory public holidays, aligning with Nigeria’s established holiday calendar.

The Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, conveyed warm festive greetings to Nigerians and extended goodwill to people of all faiths. He encouraged citizens to use the celebration period to reflect on the important virtues of love, peace, humility, and sacrifice that define the season.

In the official statement, Dr. Tunji-Ojo emphasised that the Christmas and New Year period presents an opportunity for Nigerians to strengthen unity, show compassion, and renew their collective commitment to nation-building.

“The Christmas season and the New Year present an opportunity for Nigerians to strengthen the bonds of unity, show compassion to one another, and renew our collective commitment to nation-building,” the Minister said.

He also urged all citizens to remain law-abiding, security-conscious, and cooperative with security agencies to ensure a peaceful and joyous festive period.

What This Means for Workers and the Economy

Public institutions and most businesses will observe these dates as non-working days, allowing employees nationwide to rest, celebrate with family, and participate in cultural and religious activities. Key financial markets such as the Nigerian Exchange (NGX) and other trading platforms will not be open for business on these days.

From an economic viewpoint, extended holidays can temporarily slow productivity in certain sectors but often boost consumer spending in retail, travel, hospitality, and entertainment industries. Increased consumer activity during the festive season can provide a short-term stimulus to domestic demand and local business revenues.
