Transcorp Hotels Plc, one of Nigeria’s leading hospitality companies and the hotel arm of Transnational Corporation Plc (Transcorp Group), has announced a major leadership change that takes effect January 1, 2026. Dr. (Mrs.) Awele Elumelu has been appointed Board Chairperson, succeeding Emmanuel Nnorom, who is retiring from the role.

The company made the announcement public on Tuesday, highlighting Dr. Elumelu’s record of strong leadership, business insight, and deep commitment to community development. With a professional background spanning healthcare, corporate governance, and insurance, she brings broad experience to her new position.

Dr. Elumelu currently serves as Chair of Avon Healthcare Limited (Avon HMO), a top health insurance provider in Nigeria, and Avon Medical Practice, a growing network of medical service facilities. She also chairs Heirs Insurance Brokers and is a founding director of Heirs Holdings Limited, a diversified investment company.

A medical doctor by training, Dr. Elumelu earned her MBBS degree from the University of Benin and has clinical experience in both Nigeria and the United Kingdom. She has strengthened her leadership credentials through executive education at renowned institutions including Harvard Business School, IMD in Switzerland, and the London School of Economics.

The company’s statement also emphasized Dr. Elumelu’s long-standing commitment to social impact. She is a Trustee and Co-Founder of the Tony Elumelu Foundation, one of Africa’s most influential philanthropic organisations focused on youth empowerment and entrepreneurship. Through the Foundation, she has helped provide training, seed capital, and mentorship to thousands of young African entrepreneurs, with a special focus on promoting gender inclusion in business.

Commenting on her appointment, Tony Elumelu, Group Chair of Transcorp Group, described Dr. Elumelu as a strategic thinker whose values align with the company’s goals. He noted that her expertise will be vital as Transcorp Hotels continues to innovate and improve guest experiences while building sustainable long-term value for stakeholders.

“We are delighted to welcome Dr. Awele Elumelu as the Board Chair of Transcorp Hotels. Her distinguished track record perfectly aligns with our ambition to redefine hospitality through innovation, wellness integration, and responsible business practices. Her strategic insight will be invaluable, as we continue to elevate guest experiences and deliver sustainable value to all stakeholders,” Mr. Elumelu said in the statement.

Industry watchers see this leadership shift as timely, coming at a moment when Transcorp Hotels is building on strong performance trends. The company has recorded significant growth in revenue and profit in recent periods, reflecting rising demand for hospitality services in Nigeria and increased confidence among business and leisure travelers. Growth has also been supported by the expansion of facilities and events infrastructure designed to attract larger domestic and international gatherings.

Dr. Elumelu’s appointment may also help reinforce Transcorp Hotels’ focus on leadership diversity and strategic corporate governance. Her broad experience working across sectors like healthcare, insurance, and philanthropy could bring fresh perspectives to the company’s boardroom and strengthen its approach to navigating industry challenges.

As Transcorp Hotels continues its growth trajectory, stakeholders will be watching how Dr. Elumelu’s leadership influences decisions on service innovation, operational efficiency, and expansion plans. Her leadership is expected to help the company maintain momentum in a competitive hospitality market while advancing responsible business practices that benefit employees, partners, and local communities.

The appointment comes amid strong financial growth for Transcorp Hotels, which has posted rising revenues and expanded capacity, contributing to tourism, job creation, and foreign exchange earnings in Nigeria’s hospitality sector. Strengthened leadership at the board level signals confidence in further economic contribution and investment potential.
