Giovanni Ravazzotti, founder and chairman of Italtile Limited, has seen the value of his stake in the South African home-improvement company bounce back above $400 million as the share price recovers on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange.

Ravazzotti, who turned Italtile from a single outlet into a major retail group, holds roughly 746.2 million shares, giving him a controlling 56.46 percent stake. Over the past week alone, the value of that holding has risen by more than R408 million ($21.2 million), reversing part of the steep losses recorded earlier this year.

Between 9 and 19 September, Italtile stock suffered a notable slide that wiped out around $67.5 million of Ravazzotti’s paper wealth amid weaker consumer spending and pressure on the broader retail and building materials sector. His stake fell from R8.28 billion to R7.11 billion during that period.

The group’s brands, including Italtile Retail, CTM, TopT and U-Light, have remained popular, but demand across the sector has slowed as households continue to tighten budgets.

Since 14 November, Italtile shares have gained 5.47 percent, rising from R8.95 to R9.44. That lift has pushed the company’s market value to around $720 million and boosted investor sentiment after months of volatility.

Despite the improvement, the stock is still down over 33 percent so far this year, meaning a $100,000 investment in January would now be worth about $66,760. Even so, analysts say stabilising demand and the group’s strong market position could indicate that the worst of the downturn has passed.

For Ravazzotti, the rebound offers welcome relief, and reinforces his continued influence in one of South Africa’s most recognisable retail empires.
