In a striking development, passenger demand between Lagos and Toronto surged dramatically in 2024, with traffic climbing by 28 per cent, according to data from the International Air Transport Association (IATA). This makes Lagos–Toronto one of Nigeria’s fastest-growing long-haul aviation routes, outpacing other major corridors like Lagos–New York, which grew by 19 per cent in the same period.
Dr. Samson Fatokun, IATA’s Area Manager for West and Central Africa, noted at the 2025 FAAN National Aviation Conference that this boom reflects strong commercial potential that airlines and airports in Nigeria are only beginning to tap into. He warned, however, that Nigeria’s growing number of airports could face serious financial risk unless they adopt data-driven route development strategies to capitalize on such demand.
This extraordinary rise in long-haul traffic isn’t just about moving people; it’s deeply economic. Nigeria’s aviation sector contributes about $2.5 billion annually to GDP, supporting more than 217,000 jobs, according to IATA. Tourism alone, fueled by air travel, adds $454 million to the economy and sustains over 66,000 jobs.
Yet, despite the growth in routes like Lagos–Toronto, local Nigerian airlines are not reaping the full benefit. Foreign carriers dominate long-haul travel out of Nigeria, pulling in an estimated $1–1.7 billion in gross ticket revenue yearly, a dynamic that contributes to significant foreign-exchange outflows.
Meanwhile, Nigeria’s aviation industry remains heavily concentrated: Lagos, the Federal Capital Territory, and Rivers State account for 70 per cent of its air-transport GDP contribution. Without smart, strategic planning, newer airports may struggle, draining rather than generating value.
The Lagos–Toronto route’s rapid growth underscores aviation’s rising role in Nigeria’s economy. With the sector contributing $2.5 billion to GDP and creating over 217,000 jobs, this route symbolizes a valuable export of connectivity, even as much of the revenue still flows to foreign airlines.
