The Federal Government has successfully secured a major $500 million loan facility from the World Bank, specifically designed to accelerate growth across Nigeria’s agricultural value chains. This significant injection of capital is central to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, focusing on achieving national food security and promoting rural industrialisation.

The loan will fund the Agriculture Value Chains for Growth (AGROW) Project, an initiative Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Senator Abubakar Kyari, described as a catalyst for the entire agricultural ecosystem. Speaking during a courtesy visit by a World Bank delegation, the Minister explained that the facility aims to close historical gaps in smallholder farming by improving connectivity throughout the system.

“The World Bank’s support will strengthen our agricultural base by improving connectivity across production, processing, and marketing systems,” Senator Kyari stated. He emphasised the project’s ambition, adding, “This is about turning smallholder farming into profitable, sustainable agribusiness.”

The six-year Agri-Connect initiative is designed to link farmers directly with processors, local markets, and financial systems, thereby ensuring stronger value chains, expanding the nation’s agro-processing capacity, and improving livelihoods in rural communities. The project will initially prioritise key domestic value chains, including rice, maize, soybean, and cassava.

From an economic standpoint, the $500 million facility is expected to have a transformative effect on the Nigerian economy. This massive investment will drive job creation in rural areas, reduce the nation’s reliance on food imports, and help stabilise commodity prices, which are a major factor in the current cost of living crisis. By supporting small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and integrating them into formal value chains, the loan aims to formalise and commercialise a sector that currently employs the largest share of the Nigerian population.

The World Bank’s Head of Delegation, Hardwick Ichale, reaffirmed that the project’s core purpose is unlocking Nigeria’s massive agribusiness potential through improved productivity and job creation. “The key purpose is to enable farmers to see farming as a business,” Mr Ichale noted, stressing the focus on both financial viability and promoting inclusivity for youth and women in agribusiness.

This intervention is set to complement existing government initiatives, such as the Special Agro-industrial Processing Zones, by creating a robust structure for rural agro-industrial growth. The commitment from both the Federal Government and the World Bank lays a solid foundation for sustainable food security and long-term rural prosperity in Nigeria.
