Adaora Umeoji’s rise to the top of Nigeria’s banking industry has been closely tied to one institution: Zenith Bank Plc, where she spent 26 years before becoming the bank’s first female Group Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer in June 2024.
Zenith Bank announced her appointment on March 19, 2024, saying she would succeed Ebenezer Onyeagwu when his five-year tenure ended on May 31, 2024. BusinessDay reported on March 19, 2024, that Umeoji had more than 30 years of banking experience, including 26 years at Zenith Bank.
Before becoming GMD/CEO, Umeoji served as Deputy Managing Director from October 28, 2016. Her career at Zenith included senior management responsibilities covering the Abuja and Middle Belt regions, before she moved into the bank’s top executive position. Zenith Bank’s 2024 annual report identifies her as the bank’s GMD/CEO and records her professional and academic background.
Her academic record spans several disciplines. According to Zenith Bank’s appointment announcement published by BusinessDay on March 19, 2024, Umeoji holds a Bachelor’s degree in Sociology from the University of Jos, a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting and a first-class honours degree in Law from Baze University, Abuja. She also holds an MBA from the University of Calabar, an LL.M from the University of Salford in the United Kingdom and a doctorate in Business Administration from Apollos University in the United States.
Her executive education includes the Advanced Management Programme at Harvard Business School, the Global Banking Programme at Columbia Business School, Economics for Business at MIT Sloan School of Management and strategic management training at Wharton Business School, according to Zenith Bank’s March 2024 announcement.
Umeoji took over Zenith Bank at a period when Nigerian lenders were preparing for a new round of recapitalisation. The Central Bank of Nigeria’s capital requirement for international commercial banks was set at ₦500 billion. Under Umeoji’s tenure, Zenith Bank completed a capital-raising programme that took its capital base above ₦614 billion, BusinessDay reported in March 2026.
The bank’s audited 2025 financial statements showed total assets of ₦31.46 trillion as of December 31, 2025. Zenith Bank’s 2025 annual report identifies Umeoji as Group Managing Director/CEO and records the bank’s financial performance for the year.
Umeoji has also increased her personal investment in Zenith Bank. TheCable reported on June 19, 2025, that she acquired 68,754,077 Zenith Bank shares at ₦47.95 per share, putting the value of the transaction at about ₦3.29 billion. The transaction followed a disclosure filed with the Nigerian Exchange.
Her career has also attracted several recognitions. The Federal Government honoured her with the Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON) in 2022, according to Zenith Bank’s announcement of her appointment.
Leadership Newspapers named Umeoji its Banker of the Year for 2024. In its award citation, published in 2025, the newspaper highlighted her more than three decades of banking experience and 26 years at Zenith Bank. Umeoji subsequently said the award encouraged her to do more for the banking sector and humanity.
Beyond her banking career, Umeoji is associated with the Catholic Bankers Association of Nigeria, which she founded, according to Zenith Bank and BusinessDay. She has also been identified as a UN-POLAC peace advocate. BusinessDay reported in March 2024 that she founded the association as a platform focused on ethical banking and service to humanity.
Her philanthropy has also featured in public profiles of her career. Zenith Bank’s corporate profile lists her involvement with the Pink Breathe Cancer Care Foundation and the Adorable Foundation, while Leadership reported that she is a Papal Knight of the Order of St Sylvester.
Umeoji’s story is therefore defined by a long internal progression rather than a succession of banking employers. She joined Zenith Bank in the late 1990s, rose through senior management, became Deputy Managing Director in 2016 and, eight years later, took over as the institution’s first female GMD/CEO. Her appointment marked a significant milestone in the history of one of Nigeria’s largest banks.
