FirstHoldCo Plc is set to join the FTSE Frontier 50 Index on Monday, 21 September 2026, as Nigeria prepares to return to FTSE Russell’s Frontier Market classification after three years as an “Unclassified” market. FTSE Russell’s September 2026 review named FirstHoldCo among six Nigerian companies being added to the 50-stock benchmark.

The other Nigerian companies entering the FTSE Frontier 50 are Aradel Holdings, Dangote Cement, Guaranty Trust Holding Company (GTCO), MTN Nigeria Communications and Zenith Bank. FTSE Russell said its September review added 13 companies to the index, with six of those additions coming from Nigeria.

The development follows FTSE Russell’s March 2026 country classification review, published in April, in which the index provider announced plans to reclassify Nigeria from “Unclassified” to Frontier Market status. FTSE Russell said the decision reflected improvements in the Nigerian market’s accessibility for international investors, including progress in foreign-exchange availability and the repatriation of investment proceeds.

Nigeria had been moved from Frontier Market to “Unclassified” status in September 2023. At the time, FTSE Russell cited continuing difficulties with foreign-exchange liquidity and the repatriation of capital as factors affecting international investors’ ability to access the Nigerian market.

The planned return later came under additional assessment following Nigeria’s move from a T+2 to T+1 settlement cycle on 1 June 2026. The Nigerian Exchange Group (NGX) said on 27 August 2026 that FTSE Russell had carried out the assessment after concerns were raised about the effect of the shorter settlement period on international investors.

According to NGX, the assessment involved FTSE Russell, the Securities and Exchange Commission, NGX, global custodians and other international market participants. FTSE Russell subsequently said its review had identified no material settlement, operational or funding issues arising from the T+1 transition, clearing the way for Nigeria’s reclassification to proceed.

The FTSE Frontier 50 is a selective benchmark covering 50 companies across frontier markets. FTSE Russell uses factors including market capitalisation, liquidity and free-float requirements when determining index constituents. Its indexes are used by asset managers and other institutional investors as benchmarks for investment products and portfolios.

For FirstHoldCo, inclusion in the index could increase its visibility among international institutional investors and funds that track or benchmark against frontier-market equities. It could also create additional demand for the company’s shares from index-linked investors. However, neither FTSE Russell nor FirstHoldCo has stated that the inclusion will generate a specific amount of foreign capital.

FirstHoldCo Chairman Femi Otedola described the development as a “defining milestone” in a statement issued by the company on 7 September 2026. Otedola said the inclusion reflected confidence in FirstHoldCo’s transformation, governance and business model.

The significance extends beyond FirstHoldCo. Nigeria’s return to the FTSE Frontier Market framework gives international investors a recognised benchmark through which to assess Nigerian equities after the country spent three years outside the classification.

The revised index constituents are scheduled to take effect after the close of trading on Friday, 18 September 2026, with the new FTSE Frontier 50 becoming effective on Monday, 21 September 2026.
