The House of Representatives has dissolved all its ad-hoc committees with effect from Friday, August 28, 2026, directing affected members to immediately stop all activities being carried out in the name of the committees.
The directive was contained in a notice signed by the Clerk of the House, Sidi Ibrahim, and reported by PUNCH on Sunday, September 6, 2026.
According to the notice, the dissolution followed earlier directives for the committees to complete their assignments and submit their reports within the stipulated timeframe.
The House said only two of the ad-hoc committees had sought and obtained a two-week extension, but the extension had since expired.
The decision was based on Order Eighteen, Rule 11, Paragraph 5 of the Standing Orders of the House of Representatives, which deals with limitations on the time allowed for committees to submit reports.
The provision requires committees to submit their reports within the period allotted to them. The House said that having exceeded the time allowed, the continued existence of the affected ad-hoc committees was no longer tenable.
The notice also directed chairmen of the affected committees to submit all outstanding reports, working documents, records and other materials relating to their assignments to the Office of the Clerk of the House for safekeeping.
The House reminded members that ad-hoc committees are temporary bodies established to carry out specific and time-bound assignments and are not intended to continue indefinitely beyond the purpose and period for which they were created.
The dissolution therefore brings the activities of the affected committees to an end, with members barred from continuing to act in the name of the dissolved panels.
