African Airlines Record 5.3% Growth in International Passenger Demand, Says IATA

In September 2025, African airlines recorded a notable rebound in international travel. According to the International Air Transport Association (IATA), demand for international passengers on the continent grew by 5.3 %, while available capacity rose by 5.1 % compared with the same period last year. The load factor, that is, the share of seats filled, edged up slightly, reaching 74.7 %, a marginal increase of 0.1 percentage points from September 2024.

This growth signals a steady recovery in cross-continental air travel, largely fuelled by rising business and leisure traffic within Africa. As IATA notes, although Africa’s share of the global air passenger market remains modest (about 2.2 % in September), the increase in activity is a positive marker for the region’s aviation sector.

Globally, the picture shows moderate progress. Worldwide passenger demand rose by 3.6 % year-on-year, with available capacity climbing by 3.7 % and a global load factor of 83.4 % (down 0.1 ppt from the prior year). On the international front, demand grew by about 5.1 %, with capacity up by 5.2 %, and load factors reaching 83.6 %.

Looking region-by-region for international travel in September:

Africa: demand +5.3 %, load factor 74.7%.
Asia-Pacific: demand +7.4 %, load factor ~83.3 %.  Europe: demand +2.9 %, load factor highest at ~86.2 %.
North America: demand nearly flat at -0.1 %, load factor ~81.2 %.
Middle East: demand +6.2 %, load factor ~81.8 %.
Latin America & Caribbean: demand +5.4 %, load factor ~83.6 %.

For the African region, the increase in capacity by 5.1 % indicates airlines are cautiously expanding their offerings. Because demand grew slightly faster than capacity, the load factor edged upwards: a sign that more seats put into the market are being filled. This implies improved utilisation, which tends to support revenues and cost-absorption in an industry traditionally challenged by high fixed costs and fuel volatility.

Stronger airline traffic supports tourism, trade and business connectivity, boosting foreign exchange earnings, cargo volumes and regional integration. For Africa, this uptick could mean improved airport revenues, job creation in ground services and ancillary activities, and a more resilient aviation sector, helping diversify economic growth beyond commodity-based exports.
