Nigeria’s social commerce market is reshaping the country’s retail landscape, creating new opportunities for entrepreneurs as more consumers purchase goods directly through social media platforms.

According to Mordor Intelligence, Nigeria’s e-commerce market is projected to grow from $9.35 billion in 2025 to $10.49 billion in 2026, reaching $18.68 billion by 2031, representing a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 12.23%. The research firm estimates that smartphones account for 82.3% of online shopping activity, underscoring the growing role of mobile technology in Nigeria’s digital economy.

Social commerce, where businesses market and sell products through platforms such as Instagram, WhatsApp and TikTok, has emerged as one of the fastest-growing segments of the country’s online retail industry. Mordor Intelligence projects the market will expand from $2.04 billion in 2025 to $3.96 billion by 2030, supported by rising smartphone adoption, expanding internet access and increased consumer confidence in digital payment systems.

The shift has lowered barriers to entry for many micro, small and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs). Rather than investing in standalone websites or physical storefronts, many merchants now use social media platforms to showcase products, engage customers and process orders. Consumer electronics remains the largest business-to-consumer product category, accounting for 27.6% of online retail revenue, while beauty and personal care continues to experience robust growth.

Nigeria’s expanding fintech ecosystem has also strengthened the sector by making digital payments more accessible. Bank transfers, debit cards, USSD services and digital wallets have helped simplify transactions and reduce merchants’ reliance on cash-on-delivery, improving convenience for both buyers and sellers.

Despite the sector’s rapid expansion, significant challenges remain. High logistics costs, traffic congestion and inconsistent addressing systems continue to complicate last-mile deliveries, while cybersecurity threats, online fraud and changes to social media platform algorithms present ongoing operational risks for businesses that rely heavily on digital channels.

Analysts say continued investment in logistics infrastructure, broadband connectivity and consumer protection will be essential to sustaining long-term growth. Although Nigeria has yet to fully achieve the broadband expansion targets outlined in its National Broadband Plan (2020–2025), ongoing public and private sector investment in digital infrastructure, logistics and financial technology is expected to further strengthen the country’s e-commerce ecosystem.

As smartphone adoption continues to rise and digital financial services become more widely available, social commerce is expected to play an increasingly important role in Nigeria’s retail sector, broadening participation in the digital economy and creating new opportunities for entrepreneurs and small businesses.
