The Nigerian Navy has intensified its campaign against crude oil theft with the interception of a motor tanker carrying more than 682 metric tonnes of suspected illegally sourced petroleum products off the coast of Akwa Ibom State, underscoring renewed efforts to curb economic sabotage in the country’s oil-producing region.

In a statement issued on Thursday, July 23, 2026, Naval Headquarters said the motor tanker, MT FILIA, was intercepted in the early hours of July 23, 2026, at the UTUE Terminal in Akwa Ibom State during a routine maritime security operation.

A preliminary inspection of the vessel revealed a total cargo of 682.82 metric tonnes of suspected petroleum products, comprising 650 metric tonnes of crude oil and 32.82 metric tonnes of fuel oil.

According to the Navy, all 12 crew members aboard the vessel have been taken into custody pending further investigations into the origin of the cargo and the legality of the shipment.

The operation was carried out under Operation DELTA SENTINEL, the Nigerian Navy’s flagship maritime security initiative aimed at combating crude oil theft, illegal bunkering, pipeline vandalism and other criminal activities within Nigeria’s territorial waters and the Niger Delta.

Naval authorities disclosed that the vessel was intercepted following credible intelligence on its movements. Preliminary findings indicated that the tanker allegedly lacked the necessary documentation and regulatory approvals required to transport the petroleum products.

Investigators also suspect the cargo may have been destined for illegal export, although comprehensive forensic examinations and regulatory investigations are expected to establish the exact source and ownership of the products.

The Navy said the seizure reflects the enhanced surveillance and intelligence-gathering capabilities deployed under Operation DELTA SENTINEL, which has increased patrols across strategic oil terminals, shipping routes and waterways in the South-South region.

Crude oil theft remains one of Nigeria’s most persistent economic challenges, costing the country billions of naira annually through lost production, reduced export earnings and declining government revenue. The illicit trade has also discouraged investment in the upstream petroleum sector while damaging critical oil infrastructure.

Industry analysts say sustained enforcement operations by security agencies, alongside improved monitoring technology and stronger collaboration with regulatory authorities, will be essential to reducing illegal oil activities and protecting Nigeria’s energy assets.

The Navy confirmed that MT FILIA remains under detention at a naval facility, while the vessel, crew and suspected cargo are being transferred to the appropriate regulatory and law enforcement agencies for further investigation, laboratory analysis and possible prosecution.

It reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining an aggressive maritime security posture, stating that individuals and syndicates involved in crude oil theft and other economic crimes would continue to face the full weight of the law.
