Nigeria’s drive to build a $1 trillion digital economy has taken a significant step forward, with the Federal Government moving closer to enacting the country’s first-ever E-Governance Bill — a landmark legislation that aims to integrate technology across public institutions and strengthen the nation’s digital policy framework.
The proposed law, which has successfully passed its first and second readings at the National Assembly, seeks to consolidate Nigeria’s existing and often fragmented ICT and data-related laws into a single, unified system.
It is expected to streamline government processes, enhance transparency, and boost efficiency in public service delivery.
A Framework for Digital Transformation
Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr Bosun Tijani, has described the bill as a critical enabler of Nigeria’s digital future. He said it will provide the structure needed to support innovation, improve data governance, and ensure citizens have better access to public services through digital platforms.
Once passed, the legislation is anticipated to strengthen institutional collaboration, reduce bureaucratic bottlenecks, and drive the Federal Government’s long-term goal of positioning technology as a cornerstone of national development.
Analysts believe that by fostering a cohesive digital environment and encouraging public-private partnerships, the E-Governance Bill could help Nigeria accelerate its path toward achieving its $1 trillion GDP ambition and expanding its influence in the global digital economy.
