The National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) has officially confirmed the appointment of Professor Uduma O. Uduma as the institution’s next Vice-Chancellor. Following a rigorous selection process, the Governing Council ratified the choice, which was based on the recommendation of the Joint Council and Senate Selection Board. Professor Uduma is scheduled to assume his new duties on 11 February 2026, succeeding the current Vice-Chancellor upon the conclusion of his tenure.
Professor Uduma brings a unique and distinguished academic background to the role. Born on 30 January 1966, he is an accomplished scholar of Philosophy and Logic, and also holds the title of Barrister-at-Law, having been called to the Nigerian Bar in 2007. His academic journey began at the University of Calabar, where he achieved the distinction of graduating as the best student in his faculty. He went on to complete his Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Philosophy at the University of Lagos, demonstrating a commitment to advanced learning and intellectual depth.
Throughout his career within the university system, Professor Uduma has held a variety of critical administrative and academic positions, equipping him with a comprehensive understanding of university management. Within NOUN itself, he has been a consistent driver of academic excellence and institutional growth. His previous roles include Head of Department, Director of General Studies, Director of Academic Planning, and, most recently, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic).
Notably, his dedication to the university’s core mission of widening access to education was evident during his time as the Study Centre Director in Abakaliki, Ebonyi State. Under his leadership, the centre witnessed a significant increase in student enrolment, soaring from 496 to over 2,000. This achievement highlights his capability for strategic management and effective expansion of educational opportunities.
Professor Uduma is also widely recognised as a prolific researcher, maintaining a strong visibility on Google Scholar for his contributions across philosophy, logic, and educational management. The Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council, Isa Yuguda, CON, extended his congratulations to the new Vice-Chancellor-designate. Mr Yuguda expressed strong confidence that Professor Uduma’s proven leadership and visionary approach would be instrumental in furthering NOUN’s core mandate of expanding access to quality education for people across Nigeria and beyond. The university anticipates his leadership will ensure continued success and institutional growth upon his commencement of office in early 2026.
