The Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST) has launched a significant initiative aimed at boosting the nation’s economy by drastically reducing costs for small businesses. The service announced a 15 per cent cut in logistics costs for more than 20,000 Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) who are formally registered with the Small and Medium Enterprises Development Agency of Nigeria (SMEDAN).

This key development was unveiled by the Postmaster General of the Federation and NIPOST’s Chief Executive Officer, Tola Odeyemi, during the 2025 World Post Day commemoration in Abuja. The theme of the celebration, “Post for People: Local Service, Global Reach,” perfectly encapsulated the new strategy. Ms Odeyemi highlighted that this reduction is a calculated move to support entrepreneurial growth, strengthen the country’s trade and shipping infrastructure, and closely align NIPOST with the Federal Government’s broader economic plan for inclusive growth.

It is widely acknowledged that MSMEs form the backbone of Nigeria’s economy, contributing an impressive 48 per cent to the national Gross Domestic Product (GDP). By partnering with SMEDAN to offer this substantial discount, NIPOST aims to achieve multiple goals. The primary objective is to enable the affected 20,000-plus businesses to significantly reduce their operational expenditure. This cost saving is expected to free up capital, allowing the enterprises to access wider markets and effectively compete within the rapidly expanding digital economy. Ms Odeyemi noted that NIPOST is “delivering possibilities” and helping to bridge the crucial gap between local producers and consumers globally.

In addition to the logistics discount, NIPOST revealed two ambitious digital and infrastructural projects. The first is the launch of the NIPOST Digital Market Place, a sophisticated e-commerce platform. This marketplace is specifically designed to connect Nigerian entrepreneurs with customers both within the country and internationally. Crucially, the platform integrates NIPOST’s own reliable logistics services and secure payment systems, thereby simplifying online sales, managing orders efficiently, and facilitating nationwide delivery for small-scale merchants.

The second major initiative is the NIPOST Agro-Infrastructure and Logistics Initiative (NAILI). This ambitious programme is focused on tackling long-standing challenges within Nigeria’s agricultural sector. It aims to strengthen the entire agricultural supply chain by mitigating post-harvest losses, improving product traceability for better quality assurance, and enhancing market access for numerous smallholder farmers. Under the NAILI programme, NIPOST will establish modular storage hubs, digital traceability tools, and robust logistics operations across all 774 of the nation’s local government areas. This rural-focused expansion is set to benefit over one million smallholder farmers and 3,000 agro-MSMEs, directly supporting the government’s priorities concerning food security and trade facilitation.

Coinciding with this major announcement, NIPOST also reaffirmed its commitment to the highest standards of quality service delivery and customer satisfaction, marked by the launch of the ‘Face of NIPOST’ brand ambassador initiative to promote its services nationwide.
